John Martin Ainley Brown (27 April 1928 – 12 January 2005) was a New Zealand plant physiologist and cricket umpire. Born in England, Brown earned his PhD at Durham University.[https://cdn.auckland.ac.nz/assets/calendar/archive/1960-calendar.pdf Calendar, 1960], University of Auckland, 1960, p. 28. He moved to New Zealand in 1956, becoming Professor of Plant Physiology at the University of Auckland, specialising in aquatic macrophytes.{{cite web |title=Brown, Elizabeth Anne |url=https://www.anbg.gov.au/biography/brown-elizabeth-anne.html |website=Australian National Botanic Gardens |access-date=20 May 2022}} His daughter, Elizabeth Anne Brown, born in Auckland in late 1956, was a noted bryologist.
