Kurila settled in the Northampton area after football — he had two separate spells with the Cobblers — and worked in the building trade, notably as a qualified carpenter. He was married to Nan Carr, also from Glasgow, and had three children - a daughter Keely, and two sons, Mick and Alan, who both became footballers at non-League level.{{cite web |url=http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/article3823040.ece |title=Caught in Time |work=Rob Maul |publisher=Times Online |access-date=23 March 2011}}{{dead link|date=September 2024|bot=medic}}{{cbignore|bot=medic}} Kurila died in March 2018 at the age of 76.[https://www.northamptonchron.co.uk/news/legendary-cobblers-centre-half-john-kurila-has-died-1-8403857 Legendary Cobblers centre-half John Kurila has died]
