Criticism
Rosemond has received criticism for his recommendations on toilet training{{cite web|url=http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,18716,00.html|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20010211124417/http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,18716,00.html|url-status=dead|archive-date=February 11, 2001|title=War of the Diapers|first=Michael D.|last=Lemonick|date=25 January 1999|publisher=|via=www.time.com}} and spanking{{cite web|url=http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1191825,00.html?iid=chix-sphere|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20121107044842/http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1191825,00.html?iid=chix-sphere|url-status=dead|archive-date=November 7, 2012|title=Is Spanking O.K.?|first=Pamela|last=Paul|date=8 May 2006|publisher=|via=www.time.com}} because they contradict other parenting experts' recommendations.
In 1992, Rosemond wrote a column in which he stated that an 18-month-old girl who had been sexually abused on one occasion by a non-family member (babysitter) was unlikely to ever remember the event; therefore, therapy was not called for. Rosemond's advice was in line with research into human memory which finds that regardless of the nature of an event, permanent memory does not form until around age 36 months, on average.{{cite journal|last1=Bauer|first1=Patricia J.|title=Development of episodic and autobiographical memory: The importance of remembering forgetting|journal=Developmental Review|date=December 2015|volume=38|pages=146–166|doi=10.1016/j.dr.2015.07.011|pmc=4669902|pmid=26644633}} However, it directly contradicts years of research indicating that preverbal trauma has lifelong psychological and neurodevelopmental effects, especially if untreated.{{cite journal |last1=Putnam |first1=Frank W |title=Ten-Year Research Update Review: Child Sexual Abuse |journal=Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry |date=March 2003 |volume=42 |issue=3 |pages=269–278 |doi=10.1097/00004583-200303000-00006 |pmid=12595779 }}
In 2013, the Kentucky Psychology Board initiated a letter to Rosemond from the Attorney General of Kentucky, charging Rosemond with practicing psychology in Kentucky without a license issued by them. The charge was based solely on the fact that Rosemond's syndicated column appears in five Kentucky newspapers. Rosemond sued the Kentucky Psychology Board and Attorney General in federal court, charging them with attempting to suppress his First Amendment rights.{{cite web|url=https://abcnews.go.com/US/parenting-columnist-claims-kentucky-censorship/story?id=19714678|title=Parenting Columnist Claims Kentucky Censorship|date=21 July 2013|website=ABC News}} He subsequently released the Attorney General from the suit. The Psychology Board refused to back down and the case went to court. Rosemond won in October 2015.{{cite web|url=http://www.kentucky.com/living/family/article42629730.html|title=Federal judge rules in favor of columnist John Rosemond in lawsuit against psychology board|author=|date=|website=kentucky.com}}
