John William White (25 April 1937 – 16 August 2023) was an Australian chemist who was Professor of Physical and Theoretical Chemistry, Research School of Chemistry, at the Australian National University.[http://www.arccfn.org.au/advisoryBoard.html#White Basic Bio-details here]
White was a past president of Royal Australian Chemical Institute and president of Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering. He held the Argonne Fellowship (U. of Chicago) and was for many years a Fellow of St John's College, Oxford. Between 1975 and 1981 he was director of the Institut Laue-Langevin, Grenoble, France. He was a founding member of the International Society for Science and Religion[http://www.issr.org.uk/about/founding_members.asp Founding members of ISSR] {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080329223546/http://www.issr.org.uk/about/founding_members.asp |date=2008-03-29 }} White died on 16 August 2023, at the age of 86.{{cite web |title=Vale Emeritus Professor John White AO 1937–2023 |url=https://www.aip.org.au/News/13249768 |website=Australian Institute of Physics |access-date=23 January 2024}}
Research
White and his team have developed a simple method to produce a stable, thin (~90 Å) oil film on the surface of pure water, suitable for direct measurements of the oil-water interface using ellipsometry, X-ray or neutron reflectometry, or other experimental methods.{{cite journal | last1 = Yaron | first1 = P.N. | last2 = Reynolds | first2 = P.A. | last3 = McGillivray | first3 = D.J. | last4 = Mata | first4 = J.P. | last5 = White | first5 = J.W. | year = 2010 | title = Nano- and microstructure of high-internal phase emulsions under shear | journal = J.
