A set of Joy-Con consists of two individual units, each containing an analog stick and an array of buttons. They can be used while attached to the main Nintendo Switch console unit, or detached and used wirelessly. When detached, the pair can be used by a single player, or each Joy-Con can serve as an individual controller. An upgraded version, the Joy-Con 2, are the primary controllers for the Nintendo Switch 2.

File:Nintendo Switch — Family Computer Controllers (32450967808).jpg, released exclusively in Japan for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers]]
In December 2018, Nintendo also released two Joy-Con variants with designs resembling classic Nintendo Entertainment System and Nintendo Famicom controllers, available exclusively to individuals with an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription. The Famicom variants were only available to Nintendo Switch Online members in Japan. These variants were designed to be used specifically with the library of classic Nintendo titles available through the Nintendo Switch Online service, as well as with select modern Switch titles.{{Cite news|url=https://nintendosoup.com/official-famicom-switch-controllers-now-available-for-purchase/|title=OFFICIAL FAMICOM SWITCH CONTROLLERS NOW AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE|access-date=February 20, 2019|archive-date=March 5, 2021|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210305224737/https://nintendosoup.com/official-famicom-switch-controllers-now-available-for-purchase/|url-status=live}} Both are notable for heavily deviating from the normal Joy-Con design, instead being taller and more rectangular in shape, having fewer buttons than standard Joy-Con, and, in the case of the Famicom variants, featuring a working microphone in the right controller.{{Cite news|title=Nintendo Hardware|url=https://www.nintendo.co.jp/hardware/switch/onlineservice/specialoffer/fc_controller/img/img-spec-02.jpg|access-date=February 20, 2019|archive-date=December 14, 2020|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201214201659/https://www.nintendo.co.jp/hardware/switch/onlineservice/specialoffer/fc_controller/img/img-spec-02.jpg|url-status=live}}{{Clear}}

Features
The feature set of the Joy-Con was partially inspired by feedback from players using the Wii Remote, according to Nintendo's Shinya Takahashi. After releasing games that heavily used the Wii Remote with the Wii, such as Wii Sports and Wii Fit, players had asked for different design features, such as having a smaller form factor, or being able to be strapped to a part of the body. Nintendo envisioned what benefits towards innovative design and gameplay could come from a smaller form factor, which led to the idea of a console that could be portable, controlled through these smaller controllers. This became the fundamental principle of the Switch, and directly into the Joy-Con design.{{cite web | url = https://www.gamedeveloper.com/game-platforms/the-nintendo-switch-joy-cons-and-even-labo-are-the-result-of-wii-era-feedback | title = The Nintendo Switch, Joy-Cons, and even Labo are the result of Wii-era feedback | first = Alissa | last = McAloon | date = February 9, 2018 | access-date = February 9, 2018 | work = Gamasutra | archive-date = March 8, 2021 | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20210308160638/https://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/314530/The_Nintendo_Switch_JoyCons_and_even_Labo_are_the_result_of_Wiiera_feedback.php | url-status = live }}

With the announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2 on January 16, 2025, a new Joy-Con design was revealed. The Joy-Con 2 are bigger, had easier-to-push buttons, and a new color palette. = Technical problems =
Prior to the public release of Nintendo Switch, various video gaming websites reported that the controllers—most commonly the Joy-Con L—were susceptible to connection losses when used wirelessly. It was initially unknown whether these problems were the result of an interference issue, or caused by the pre-launch software on review units.{{cite web|title=Nintendo Switch Joy-Con connection issue sparks concern ahead of launch|url=http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2017-02-24-concerns-for-nintendo-switch-joy-con-connectivity-after-reviewers-report-controller-issue|website=Eurogamer|date=February 24, 2017|access-date=March 7, 2017|archive-date=March 7, 2017|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170307203758/http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2017-02-24-concerns-for-nintendo-switch-joy-con-connectivity-after-reviewers-report-controller-issue|url-status=live}} A Nintendo spokesperson stated to Polygon that the company would "continue to monitor the performance of Nintendo Switch hardware and software, and make improvements when necessary". ==Joy-Con drift==
One of the more common issues to be found with the Joy-Con is joystick drift. This issue occurs when dust or other small particles come in contact with the internal sensors of the analog stick. A common remedy for this issue is to apply compressed air or contact cleaner under the rubber skirt of the joystick.{{cite web|title=How to fix controller drift on your Joy-Cons|url=https://www.imore.com/how-fix-controller-drift-your-joy-cons|website=iMore|access-date=March 28, 2019|archive-date=March 29, 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190329234637/https://www.imore.com/how-fix-controller-drift-your-joy-cons|url-status=live}} Nintendo repairs this issue for free if under warranty, but the cost of repair for an out of warranty Joy-Con could be over 40 United States dollars according to many reports on the topic. The high price of repair leads many to buy an entirely new Joy-Con as they only cost slightly more than a repair, a single being $49.99 and a set of two $79.99.{{cite web|title=The pricing on Nintendo Switch accessories is a bad, bad joke|url=https://www.polygon.com/2017/1/13/14261342/nintendo-switch-extra-controller-price-terrible|website=Polygon|date=January 13, 2017|access-date=March 28, 2019|archive-date=March 29, 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190329234632/https://www.polygon.com/2017/1/13/14261342/nintendo-switch-extra-controller-price-terrible|url-status=live}} In response to increased complaints and potential legal action for the drift issue, Nintendo stated that they were aware of the frequent reports, but did not offer immediate advice outside of contacting their technical support lines.{{cite web | url = https://kotaku.com/nintendo-responds-to-sufferers-of-joy-con-drift-1836614170 | title = Nintendo Responds To Sufferers Of Joy-Con Drift | first = Gita | last = Jackson | date = July 22, 2019 | access-date = July 22, 2019 | work = Kotaku | archive-date = July 23, 2019 | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20190723002615/https://kotaku.com/nintendo-responds-to-sufferers-of-joy-con-drift-1836614170 | url-status = live }} On July 23, 2019, three days after the filing of a class action lawsuit, an internal Nintendo memo was leaked; the memo instructed the firm's customer service employees in North America to start offering repairs for drifting Joy-Con controllers for free, regardless of warranty status.{{cite web | url = https://www.vice.com/en/article/internal-nintendo-memo-instructs-customer-service-to-fix-joy-con-drift-for-free/ | title = Internal Nintendo Memo Instructs Customer Service to Fix 'Joy-Con Drift' for Free | first = Patrick | last = Klepek | date = July 23, 2019 | access-date = August 9, 2019 | work = Vice Games | archive-date = July 24, 2019 | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20190724000852/https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/8xzzva/internal-nintendo-memo-instructs-customer-service-to-fix-joy-con-drift-for-free | url-status = live }}

With the release of the OLED revision of the Switch in October 2021, Nintendo said that the new Joy-Con design should reduce the drift problem but they did not expect that they could ever eliminate the drift as it is an issue related to wear from long-term usage. =Patent challenge=
In August 2017, Los Angeles-based tablet peripheral manufacturer Gamevice filed a lawsuit against Nintendo in the United States District Court for the Central District of California, alleging that the design of the Joy-Con controllers conflicts with its patent on the design for the Wikipad, an Android-based gaming device that also features a tablet with a detachable controller.
