Around 1995, as he began studying visual arts at Pontifical Xavierian University,{{Cite web|url=http://sketchroom.co/juan-pablo-echeverri|title=Juan Pablo Echeverri|website=www.sketchroom.co/}} he sporadically started taking 4×5 cm pictures for his personal diaries. When this became a daily habit, the compendium of the pictures became a long-term project titled Miss Fotojapón.{{Cite web|url=https://www.vice.com/es/article/estas-invitado-a-los-15-de-miss-foto-japon/|title=¡Felices 15 miss Fotojapón!|website=Vice.com}}
One year after his graduation, in 2003, Miss Fotojapón earned Echeverri a solo show at Bogotá Museum of Modern Art.{{Cite web|url=https://www.elespectador.com/el-magazin-cultural/250-fotos-para-salir-del-closet-article-87550/|title=ELESPECTADOR.COM|first=El|last=Espectador|date=19 March 2020|website=ELESPECTADOR.COM}} In 2010, a fraction of this piece was acquired by the Museum of the Bank of the Republic for its permanent collection.{{Cite web|url=https://www.banrepcultural.org/coleccion-de-arte/obra/miss-fotojapon-ap5094|title=La Red Cultural del Banco de la República|first=Subgerencia Cultural del Banco de la|last=República|website=www.banrepcultural.org}} In 2022, Miss Fotojapón had more than 8000 pictures, and had been exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery in London as part of the From Selfie to Self-Expression exhibition in 2017,{{Cite web|url=http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2017/mar/30/selfie-as-art-at-saatchi-gallery-from-rembrandt-to-a-grinning-macaque|title=Selfie as art at Saatchi gallery: from Rembrandt to a grinning macaque|date=30 March 2017|website=The Guardian}}{{Cite web|url=https://arterritory.com/en/visual_arts/reviews/19024-from_selfie_to_self-expression_at_the_saatchi_gallery_london/|title=From Selfie to Self-Expression at the Saatchi Gallery, London|website=Arterritory.com}}{{Cite web|url=https://www.artsy.net/show/saatchi-gallery-from-selfie-to-self-expression|title=From Selfie to Self-Expression | Artsy|website=www.artsy.net}} and included in the books 500 Self-Portraits (2018){{Cite web|url=https://www.hungertv.com/feature/seven-seminal-self-portraits-through-the-ages/|title=Seven seminal self portraits through the ages|website=hungertv.com}} and Younger than Jesus Directory (2009), both published by Phaidon Press.{{cite web|access-date=31 January 2022|title=Prints|url=https://archive.newmuseum.org/print-ephemera/7145|website=New Museum Digital Archive}}
Echeverri also created short series that, according to critics Jaime Cerón and Andrés Isaac, dealt with the construction of the persona and the stereotype-based perception of the "other". Some of these series—Fantasía de Macho maduro (2001), merengue glacé (2007), Supersonas (2011), futuroSEXtraños (2016) and Muertos Vivientes (2019)—have been displayed in venues such as the Colombian National Museum in Bogotá,{{Cite web|url=https://www.museonacional.gov.co/noticias/Paginas/Juntos_Aparte.aspx|title=El Museo Nacional abre exposición que relata la crisis migratoria venezolana y global|website=www.museonacional.gov.co}}{{Cite web|url=https://bienalsur.org/es/single_agenda/296|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210725220852/https://bienalsur.org/es/single_agenda/296|url-status=usurped|archive-date=25 July 2021|title=BIENALSUR: Juntos Aparte en el Museo Nacional|website=bienalsur.org}} Biennial of Contemporary Art in Ireland (2018),{{Cite web|url=https://www.eva.ie/artist/juan-pablo-echeverri/|title=Juan Pablo Echeverri|website=EVA International}} and the Rencontres d'Arles in France (2017).{{Cite web|url=http://www.rencontres-arles.com//en/expositions/view/149/la-vuelta|title=La Vuelta|website=Rencontres d'Arles}}
