{{lang|nl|Junior Songfestival}} ({{IPA|nl|ˈjynijɔr ˈsɔŋfɛstiˌvɑl}}; {{literally|Junior Song Festival}}) is a Dutch televised music competition for children, held annually since 2003. It is the children's version of the {{lang|nl|Nationaal Songfestival}}. The winner of the contest goes on to represent the Netherlands in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest ({{Langx|nl|Junior Eurovisiesongfestival}}), an international version of the competition.{{Cite web|title=Avro Junior Song|url=https://postlounge.nl/portfolio_page/junior-song/|access-date=22 June 2020|work=Postlounge|language=nl}}
History
The first edition was organised in 2003 by Dutch broadcaster AVRO (which later became AVROTROS). Kids of age 8 through 15 could submit their own original songs,{{Cite web|url=https://www.trouw.nl/nieuws/roel-wint-nationaal-junior-songfestival~b026bce6|url-access=registration|title=Roel wint nationaal Junior Songfestival|trans-title=Roel wins national Junior Songfestival|language=nl|work=Trouw|date=22 September 2003|access-date=29 August 2020}} of which nine songs advanced to the televised final. From 2004 until 2015, the candidates also sang a common song that did not compete, and (with the exception of 2006) the show also consisted of two televised semi-finals.
In 2006, the television programme won the {{lang|nl|Gouden Stuiver}} ({{langx|en|Golden Nickle}}), a Dutch award for children's television.{{Cite web|url=https://www.ad.nl/ad/nl/1002/Show/article/detail/2339044/2006/10/20/Gouden-Televizier-Ring-voor-De-Lama-s.dhtml|title=Gouden Televizier-Ring voor De Lama's|language=nl|date=20 October 2006|location=Amsterdam|work=Algemeen Dagblad|agency=ANP|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160304211510/https://www.ad.nl/ad/nl/1002/Show/article/detail/2339044/2006/10/20/Gouden-Televizier-Ring-voor-De-Lama-s.dhtml|archive-date=2016-03-04|url-status=dead}}
In 2016, there was no televised show; the entrant for that year's Junior Eurovision Song Contest was selected internally.{{Cite web|url=https://eurovoix.com/2016/05/27/netherlands-kymora-stefania-sterre-to-junior-eurovision-2016|title=The Netherlands: Kymora, Stefania & Sterre to Junior Eurovision 2016|last=Granger|first=Anthony|date=27 May 2015|access-date=29 August 2020|work=Eurovoix}} Also, since that year the auditors no longer need to submit original songs.{{Cite web|url=https://eurovoix.com/2015/11/22/the-netherlands-junior-eurovision-2016-participation-confirmed|title=The Netherlands: Junior Eurovision 2016 Participation Confirmed|last=Granger|first=Anthony|date=22 November 2015|access-date=29 August 2020|work=Eurovoix}} The show returned in 2017 with semi-finals, but the finalists sang covers instead of original songs.{{Cite web|url=https://eurovoix.com/2017/06/07/netherlands-return-televised-junior-songfestival-format|title=The Netherlands: Return to Televised Junior Songfestival Format|last=Farren|first=Neil|date=7 June 2017|access-date=29 August 2020|work=Eurovoix}} Since 2018, there are no semi-finals and the competing songs were written by famous Dutch musicians. The 2016 and 2017 songs have also been written by famous Dutch musicians.{{Cite web|url=https://eurovoix.com/2018/06/08/netherlands-junior-songfestival-final-lineup-complete|title=The Netherlands: Junior Songfestival Final Lineup Complete|last=Farren|first=Neil|date=8 June 2018|access-date=29 August 2020|work=Eurovoix}} In addition the common song returned in 2019.
