KAOS (software development)
KAOS, is a goal-oriented software requirements capturing approach in requirements engineering. It is a specific Goal modeling method; another is i*. It allows for requirements to be calculated from goal diagrams.[http://www.cs.utoronto.ca/~alexei/pub/Lapouchnian-Depth.pdf Goal-Oriented Requirements Engineering: An Overview of the Current Research]. KAOS stands for Knowledge Acquisition in automated specificationA. Dardenne, A. van Lamsweerde and S. Fickas. Goal-Directed Requirements Acquisition. Science of Computer Programming, 20(1-2), April 1993. or Keep All Objectives Satisfied.A. van Lamsweerde, E. Letier. From Object Orientation to Goal Orientation: A
Paradigm Shift for Requirements Engineering. Proc. Radical Innovations of Software and Systems Engineering, LNCS, 2003.
The University of Oregon and the University of Louvain (Belgium) designed the KAOS methodology in 1990 by Axel van Lamsweerde and others.[http://www.objectiver.com/fileadmin/download/documents/KaosTutorial.pdf A KAOS Tutorial]. It is taught worldwide at the university levelList of universities teaching KAOS include Michigan State ([http://www.cse.msu.edu/~cse870/Lectures/Notes/02c-kaos-goal-modeling-bhc-v3-notes.pdf lectures]), Pace ([http://csis.pace.edu/~marchese/CS775/Lectures/775L6b.ppt lectures]), Louvain ([https://www.cs.scranton.edu/~mccloske/courses/se507/vanLams_kaos_presentation.pdf lectures]), Coimbra and others. for capturing software requirements.
There is lack of evidence that KAOS is used in the industry{{cite web |title=Is KAOS goal modeling used in the industry? |url=https://softwareengineering.stackexchange.com/questions/443783/is-kaos-goal-modeling-used-in-the-industry |website=Software Engineering Stack Exchange |access-date=5 February 2023}} and as of February 2023, the only tool supporting it is [https://objectiver.com/index.php?id=3 Objectiver], written by the same group{{cite web |title=Respect-IT technology |url=https://objectiver.com/index.php?id=81 |website=Objectiver homepage |access-date=5 February 2023}} behind the KAOS methodology, with the latest release 3.0c47 dated at March 9th, 2012.{{cite web |title=Objectiver releases |url=https://objectiver.com/index.php?id=4 |website=Objectiver homepage |access-date=5 February 2023}}
