Production
Keyaar had planned to make the film with Prashanth during 1996, but the actor's commitments to Shankar's Jeans (1998), meant that he could not allot dates to start the project.{{Cite web |last=Sitaraman |first=Sandya |date=Jan 17, 1997 |title=Tamil Movie News--Pudhu Edition 3 |url=https://groups.google.com/g/soc.culture.tamil/c/ibv76-CAjoA |access-date=15 July 2021 |website=Google Groups |archive-date=20 October 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231020004822/https://groups.google.com/g/soc.culture.tamil/c/ibv76-CAjoA |url-status=live }} Consequently, Bhaskar of Oscar Movies signed George Vishnu, the son of former actress Sheela to debut in his production, Kadhal Rojavae in 1997 and according to the deal signed, Vishnu was not supposed to act in any other film until Kadhal Rojavae had been completed and released. However, during production, Vishnu could not wait and starred in a Malayalam film, while Keyaar was still shooting causing a rift between the actor and producer Bhaskar during the making of the project. Pooja Kumar, who was crowned Miss India USA in 1995, was selected to make her debut as heroine.{{Cite web |title=1997–98'ன் கோடம்பாக்கக் குஞ்சுகள் |trans-title=1997–98 Kodambakkam babies |url=http://www.indolink.com/tamil/cinema/People/97/Dec/kuttisp1.htm |url-status=usurped |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160303201551/http://indolink.com/tamil/cinema/People/97/Dec/kuttisp1.htm |archive-date=3 March 2016 |access-date=25 August 2012 |website=Indolink |language=en}}

Reception
Savitha Padmanabhan of The Hindu wrote, "Both the newcomers have a long way to go in honing their acting skills". Savitha also added that "the high point of the film is the music by Ilaiyaraja. The same can be said about the background score that lifts the mood of the film to some extent."{{Cite news |last=Padmanabhan |first=Savitha |date=21 January 2000 |title=Film Review:Kadhal Rojavae |url=http://hindu.com/2000/01/21/stories/09210225.htm |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130213141106/http://hindu.com/2000/01/21/stories/09210225.htm |archive-date=13 February 2013 |access-date=25 August 2012 |work=The Hindu}} Malini Mannath of Chennai Online wrote, "The movie has a jaded look. For those who have seen (It Happened One Night - or nearer home, Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin) the script will be a familiar one. Vishnu [...] and Pooja, both debutants, show promise and are at ease with their roles. What stands out is [Ilaiyaraaja's] catchy song numbers".{{Cite web |last=Mannath |first=Malini |title=Kadhal Rojave |url=http://www.chennaionline.com/Moviereviews/tammov3.asp |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20030710151746/http://www.chennaionline.com/Moviereviews/tammov3.asp |archive-date=10 July 2003 |access-date=12 January 2022 |website=Chennai Online}}
