The Kakanui Range (or Kakanui Mountains){{cite web|url=https://www.topomap.co.nz/NZTopoMap?v=2&ll=-45.055462,170.364389&z=14|title=NZTopoMap:Kakanui Mountains|access-date=23 September 2024}} is a range of high hills located inland from Oamaru in the South Island of New Zealand. The range forms a boundary between the valley of the Waitaki River to the north and the high plateau known as the Maniototo and the upper watershed of the Taieri River to the southwest.

The western Kakanui Range is crossed by road at Danseys Pass, which has a saddle at {{cvt|935|m}}. The eastern portions start to the north east of The Pigroot and Pigroot Hill to the east of the road is a foothill of the range.{{cite web|url=https://www.topomap.co.nz/NZTopoMap?v=2&ll=-45.20789,170.43096&z=14|title=NZTopoMap:Pigroot Hill|access-date=23 September 2024}}

Geology

The southwestern slopes of the Kakanui Range were a major goldfield during the Otago gold rush of the 1860s. Relics from this goldrush can be found at Kyeburn and Naseby.

The Kakanui Range is composed of metamorphosed sedimentary rocks of the Rakaia Terrane. This has been described as quartzofeldspathic semischist.{{cite journal|first1=P.J.|last1 =Forsyth|first2 =G.M.|last2 =Martin|first3 =H.J.|last3=Campbell|first4 =J.E.|last4 =Simes|first5 =R.S.|last5 =Nicoll|year =2006|title=Carboniferous conodonts from Rakaia Terrane, East Otago, New Zealand|journal =New Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics|volume =49|issue =3|pages=329–336|doi=10.1080/00288306.2006.9515171|doi-access=free}}{{rp|p=333}}

The Kakanuis continue as the Horse Range and then the Blue Mountains (there is another range called the Blue Mountains in Otago){{cite web|url=https://www.topomap.co.nz/NZTopoMap?v=2&ll=-45.390274,170.693893&z=11|title=NZTopoMap:Blue Mountains|access-date=23 September 2024}} to the Pacific at Shag Point.{{rp|p=330}}{{Cite web|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=ihS1oFMPENwC|title=Bulletin|year=1919}} Except where exposed by stream erosion or road cuttings there is no surface evidence of the rhyolitic deposits from what must have been a surface eruption at about 112 million years ago that extends this distance of {{convert|50|km|abbr=on}}{{cite journal|last1=Tulloch |first1=AJ| last2= Ramezani |first2=J |last3= Mortimer |first3=N|last4= Mortensen |last5=J|last6= van den Bogaard |first6=P |last7= Maas |first7=R |title= Cretaceous felsic volcanism in New Zealand and Lord Howe Rise (Zealandia) as a precursor to final Gondwana break-up| journal= Geological Society, London, Special Publications | year=2009| volume=321|issue=1 |pages=89–118 |doi= 10.1144/SP321.5}} and was subsequently covered by ocean sediments.

=Soil=

The soil in farmland near the ranges is acid and has the potential to cause aluminium toxicity in crops. Partial mitigation can be with lime, with full mitigation with gypsum unlikely to be economic.{{cite report|last=Venter|first=H.J.|year=2017|chapter=Soil acidity in the Kakanui ranges|title =Science and policy: nutrient management challenges for the next generation Occasional Report No. 30|editor-first1=L.D.|editor-last1 =Currie|editor-first2=M.J.|editor-last2=Hedley|chapter-url=https://www.massey.ac.nz/~flrc/workshops/17/Manuscripts/Paper_Venter_2017.pdf|url=http://flrc.massey.ac.nz/publications.html|publisher =Fertilizer and Lime Research Centre, Massey University|location =Palmerston North, New Zealand|pages=1–8}}

Peaks

The highest point in the Kakanui Range is Mount Pisgah, at {{convert|1643|m|ft}}.{{cite web|url=https://www.topomap.co.nz/NZTopoMap?v=2&ll=-45.08013,170.39206&z=14|title=NZTopoMap:Mount Pisgah|access-date=23 September 2024}}
