Controversy

After Kalpanakumari Devi's Achinha Basabhumi was nominated for the Sahitya Akademi award, several Odia litterateurs protested against it,{{cite news|newspaper=The Telegraph|url=http://www.telegraphindia.com/1111231/jsp/odisha/story_14945271.jsp#.Vn8gMRGl2FU|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160105053249/http://www.telegraphindia.com/1111231/jsp/odisha/story_14945271.jsp#.Vn8gMRGl2FU|url-status=dead|archive-date=5 January 2016|author=Namita Panda|date=31 December 2011|title=Furore over award to Kalpanakumari}} citing procedural irregularities as well critical differences with the choice. Upon the announcement of the award to the author, Barendra Krushna Dhal, a member of the Sahitya Akademi's advisory board resigned in protest. Sricharan Pratap Kanishka, an Odia writer, filed a public interest litigation with the Orissa High Court in January 2012 against the award, leading to an interim stay of the presentation ceremony. His complaint was that, in order to be eligible for the award, the book should have been published between 2007 and 2009, and he accused the book's publisher of having back-dated its publication date to 2009, whereas, he claimed, it was published in 2010.{{cite news|newspaper=New Indian Express|url=http://www.newindianexpress.com/states/odisha/article319471.ece|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160304204542/http://www.newindianexpress.com/states/odisha/article319471.ece|url-status=dead|archive-date=4 March 2016|date=14 February 2012|title=HC Judgment on Odia Novel Today}}{{cite news|newspaper=The Sunday Indian|url=http://www.thesundayindian.com/en/story/odia-novel-not-odia-enough/27/28148/|date=15 January 2012|author=Dhrutikam Mohanty|title=Odia novel not Odia enough|access-date=26 December 2015|archive-date=19 April 2012|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120419064630/http://www.thesundayindian.com/en/story/odia-novel-not-odia-enough/27/28148/|url-status=dead}}

The litigation was rejected by the high court on 14 February 2012, and Kalpanakumari Devi received the award.
