Cast

Production

Director Bharathi Kannan had initially cast Khushbu in the lead role during mid-2004. The actress however was busy with film production work for Avni Cinemax as they were making Giri (2004), and had been slow to lose weight to play the character. As a result, Roja was drafted in to replace Khushbu in the lead role.{{Cite web|url=https://www.indiaglitz.com/roja-for-kushboo-tamil--news-11003|title=Roja for Kushboo - News|date=19 October 2004|website=IndiaGlitz.com}} Khushbu still remained hopeful of being reinstated in the role and hired karakattam dancers from Pudukottai to assist her with preparation, though Roja was finalised.{{Cite web|url=http://www.cinesouth.com/masala/hotnews/new/07102004-1.shtml|archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20050207211038/http://www.cinesouth.com/masala/hotnews/new/07102004-1.shtml|archive-date = 7 February 2005|url-status=dead|title = டோடோவின் ரஃப் நோட்டு — Tamil Kavithai -- தமிழ் கவிதைகள் - நூற்று கணக்கில்!}}{{Cite web|url=http://www.cinesouth.com/masala/hotnews/new/01102004-4.shtml|title=Dailynews - Roja's retaliation to Khushboo|date=7 February 2005|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20050207223839/http://www.cinesouth.com/masala/hotnews/new/01102004-4.shtml|archive-date=7 February 2005}}

Impressed by the plot, actress Vilasini — who had earlier appeared in films such as Nalla Manasukkaran (1997) and Andipatti Arasampatti (2002) — agreed to jointly produce the film. It was the first film for Vilasini following her return from a spell in prison.{{Cite web|url=http://www.cinesouth.com/masala/hotnews/new/20092004-5.shtml|title=Dailynews - The original story of 'Karagaatakari'|date=7 February 2005|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20050207210020/http://www.cinesouth.com/masala/hotnews/new/20092004-5.shtml|archive-date=7 February 2005}}{{cite web |url=http://thatstamil.indiainfo.com/specials/cinema/heroines/vilasini.html |title=Vilasini produces another film |website=thatstamil.indiainfo.com |access-date=13 January 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20050425215847/http://thatstamil.indiainfo.com/specials/cinema/heroines/vilasini.html |archive-date=25 April 2005 |url-status=dead}} Vilasini produced the film alongside London Shoban of Shrinidhi Theatres, who brought in several actors who had appeared in roles in the unrelated Karakattakkaran (1989), which had a similar theme.{{Cite web|url=http://www.cinesouth.com/masala/hotnews/new/06092004-6.shtml|title=Dailynews - Khushboo as 'Karagaatakaari'|date=4 February 2005|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20050204150439/http://www.cinesouth.com/masala/hotnews/new/06092004-6.shtml|archive-date=4 February 2005}} The filming was held at Sankaran Koil, Thirunellveli, Kutralam, Papanasam, Ambasamudhram and Surandai.{{cite web|url=http://www.cinesouth.com/scopes/previews/new/kara.shtml|title=Karagattam|website=Cinesouth|access-date=14 July 2024|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20050215165643/http://www.cinesouth.com/scopes/previews/new/kara.shtml|date=26 October 2004|archive-date=15 February 2005}}
