Reaction

The final bout of the men's over-75 kilogram kumite ended after Iranian Sajjad Ganjzadeh was knocked out by his opponent, Saudi Tareg Hamedi.{{cite web|url=https://www.aljazeera.com/sports/2021/8/7/irans-ganjzadeh-wins-karate-olympic-gold-opponent-disqualified |title=Ganjzadeh wins karate Olympic gold as opponent disqualified|website=NBC Olympics |access-date=25 August 2021}}

The judges' decision to disqualify Hamedi and crown Ganjzadeh as champion as he was being removed from the arena on a stretcher sparked strong reactions around the karate world, such as Karate Combat chief Adam Kovacs saying Hamedi was "robbed",{{cite web|url=https://mmajunkie.usatoday.com/2021/08/karate-combat-wants-to-book-olympic-gold-medal-rematch-ganjzadeh-vs-hamedi |title=Karate Combat chief says Tareg Hamedi 'robbed of a gold medal' at Olympics, offers rematch|website=MMA Junkie |access-date=25 August 2021}} while others pointed out a deeper division and one-sided attacks from other karate organizations.{{cite web|url=https://www.shunryu.net/post/what-is-really-wrong-with-olympic-style-karate |title=What Is Really Wrong With Olympic-Style Karate |website=Shunryu Martial Arts |access-date=25 August 2021}}
