Technology entrepreneurship
Denninger was the founder and CEO of MCSNet in Chicago. Opened as Macro Computer Solutions, Incorporated in 1987, it expanded its service offerings in 1993 to become one of the area's first commercial internet service providers.{{cite news|url=https://www.chicagotribune.com/1998/09/28/sosa-on-line/|first=James|last=Coates|title=You've Got Dough|work=Chicago Tribune|date=September 28, 1998|access-date=January 6, 2013}}{{cite news|url=http://nl.newsbank.com/nl-search/we/Archives?p_product=CSTB&p_theme=cstb&p_action=search&p_maxdocs=200&p_topdoc=1&p_text_direct-0=0F807EC8D07A3DF2&p_field_direct-0=document_id&p_perpage=10&p_sort=YMD_date:D&s_trackval=GooglePM|title=The movers and shakers who brought Chicago into the Internet Age|work=Chicago Sun-Times|date=December 9, 2003|accessdate=January 5, 2013}} Among its customers was the Chicago Public Library, which relied on MCSNet for both internet access and web hosting.{{cite news|url=https://www.chicagotribune.com/1997/01/17/library-shelves-plan-for-own-on-line-service/|title=Library Shelves Plan For Own On-line Service|work=Chicago Tribune|date=January 17, 1997|access-date=January 6, 2013}} In 1997 he led a coalition of ISPs in setting up the Enhanced Domain Name System, a short-lived alternative DNS root which allowed registrants to add their own generic top-level domains.{{cite news|url=http://connection.ebscohost.com/c/articles/9707181217/schism-hits-domain-name-system|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131029190527/http://connection.ebscohost.com/c/articles/9707181217/schism-hits-domain-name-system|url-status=dead|archive-date=October 29, 2013|first=Will|last=Rodger|title=Schism hits Domain Name System|work=Inter@ctive Week|date=February 1997|volume=4|number=5|accessdate=January 5, 2013}}{{cite news|url=http://news.cnet.com/Rogue-domains-revolt/2100-1023_3-275957.html|title=Rogue domains revolt|work=CNET|date=March 4, 1997|accessdate=January 6, 2013}} Denninger continued to run MCSNet until August 1998, when he sold it to Winstar Communications for an undisclosed amount. After the sale of MCSNet, he moved to Florida, where he began to devote more time to stock trading and political activism.{{cite news|url=http://www.wjhg.com/home/headlines/29712844.html|first=Alex|last=Denis|title=Niceville Man Gets National Attention|work=WJHG News|date=September 24, 2008|accessdate=January 5, 2013}}
Blogging and political activism
Denninger is a founding contributor to the libertarian-oriented finance blog market-ticker.org, and has used the internet to bring attention to his concerns with the financial system.{{cite news|url=http://www.securitiestechnologymonitor.com/news/-25305-1.html|first=John|last=Dodge|title=Anatomy of a Plunge: Geyser of Orders Put NYSE in 'Slow Mode'|work=Securities Technology Monitor|date=May 7, 2010|accessdate=January 5, 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131029194728/http://www.securitiestechnologymonitor.com/news/-25305-1.html|archive-date=October 29, 2013|url-status=dead}} He now utilizes his blog to sell his home networking daemon and sell the artwork of his daughter. In the aftermath of the March 2008 collapse of Bear Stearns, he helped found the website FedUpUSA.org{{cite news|url=http://tuttoaffari.lastampa.it/_web/cmstp/tmplrubriche/midterm2010/grubrica.asp?ID_blog=321&ID_articolo=7&ID_sezione=711|first=Francesco|last=Semprini|title=Il fondatore del movimento, Karl Denninger, si scaglia contro l'ex governatore dell'Alaska e i Patriots|work=La Stampa|date=October 26, 2010|accessdate=January 5, 2013}}{{Dead link|date=February 2020 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }} He came to national attention for the criticisms of the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 which he posted on FedUpUSA.org in September that year. Of special concern to Denninger was the over-the-counter trading of credit default swaps, as well as the high leverage of financial institutions; his objections to the bailout plan stemmed from the fact that it did not address either of these issues. He has also spoken out against high-frequency trading, particularly in the aftermath of the 2010 Flash Crash.
Denninger was also one of the early members of the Tea Party movement, sometimes referred to as a founder.{{cite news |url=http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2010/10/tea-party-founder-slams-tea-party/ |first=Daniel |last=Tencer |title=Tea Party 'founder': Palin, Gingrich a 'joke' |date=October 20, 2010 |work= The Raw Story |accessdate=October 24, 2010}} On January 20, 2009, the day of President Obama's first inauguration, he published a blog post calling on readers to mail tea bags to the White House and Congress on February 1, echoing a suggestion by a commenter on one of his earlier blog posts.{{cite web|url=http://market-ticker.org/akcs-www?singlepost=2137825|first=Karl|last=Denninger|title=February 1st Tea Party?|work=The Market Ticker|date=January 20, 2009|accessdate=January 5, 2013}}{{cite news|url=http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jane-hamsher/a-teabagger-timeline-koch_b_187312.html |title=Jane Hamsher: A Teabagger Timeline: Koch, Coors, Newt, Dick Armey There From The Start | work=The Huffington Post |date= May 16, 2009|accessdate=April 27, 2010}} However, Denninger later expressed concern with the Tea Party movement, stating in an October 20, 2010, blog post that Republicans had hijacked the movement and perverted its original goals to the standard Republican concerns of "guns, gays and God".
