History
The district lies in the cultural region of Braj. Kasganj was established on 17 April 2008 by separating Kasganj, Patiali and Sahawar tehsils from Etah district. For a while, the district was named after a politician, Kanshi Ram. The decision taken by Mayawati, chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and president of the BSP provoked protests by lawyers who had proposed to call it in honor of Sant Sant Tulsidas, who was born in the district, that place known as Soron (Sukarkshetra).{{Cite web |url=http://news.webindia123.com/news/Articles/India/20080416/933585.html |title=Lawyers against naming new Kasganj district after Kanshi Ram |access-date=20 May 2015 |archive-date=5 March 2016 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160305011244/http://news.webindia123.com/news/Articles/India/20080416/933585.html |url-status=dead }} The district reverted to its original name in 2012.{{cite web|title=Important Cabinet Decisions|url=http://information.up.nic.in/View_engnews.aspx?id=54|publisher=Information and Public Relations Department|access-date=17 January 2013|location=Lucknow|archive-date=24 October 2014|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20141024154715/http://information.up.nic.in/View_engnews.aspx?id=54|url-status=dead}} Adjacent districts of Kasganj are Aligarh, Budaun, Etah, Farrukhabad and Atrauli Tehsil.
