Katablepharis (alternative spelling Kathablepharis{{Cite web|url=http://tolweb.org/Katablepharids/2413|title = Katablepharids}}) is a genus of single-celled eukaryotes comprising five to six{{cite journal | pmid = 10724518 |date=Mar 1999 |author1=Clay, B |author2=Kugrens, P | title = Systematics of the enigmatic kathablepharids, including EM characterization of the type species, Katablepharis phoenikoston, and new observations on K. remigera comb.nov | volume = 150 | issue = 1 | pages = 43–59 | issn = 1434-4610 | journal = Protist | doi = 10.1016/S1434-4610(99)70008-8 }} species. They are heterotrophic and live in both freshwater and seawater.{{cite journal | pmc = 372886 | journal = Microbiological Reviews | date = Dec 1992 | pages = 529–542 | volume = 56 | issue = 4 | title = Relationship between the flagellates and the ciliates |author1=Robert Edward Lee |author2=Paul Kugrens | doi = 10.1128/mr.56.4.529-542.1992 | pmid = 1480107 }} They have two flagella and a feeding apparatus consisting of a mouth and two arrays of microtubules (one inside the other).

Etymology

It derives its name from the Greek words κατά (kata) (downwards) and βλεφαρίς (blepharis) (eyelash).
