History

The original structure of the Katie Wheeler Library was constructed in 1876. It was originally a ranch house that would eventually come into control by James Irvine II. Irvine would double the size of the building. After the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, Irvine would relocate his entire family to this spot.{{cite news |title=Then and Now: Katie Wheeler Library |url=https://www.ocregister.com/2013/03/30/then-and-now-katie-wheeler-library/ |publisher=OC Register |date=March 30, 2013}}

In 1965, the original structure burned down and later was demolished. The property that is in use today is a reconstruction.{{cite web |title=The Katie Wheeler Library |url=https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=205835 |website=Historical Marker Database}}

The Katie Wheeler Library is supposedly haunted. It is believed that the ghost of Kathryn Helena Irvine haunts the location, having died on the site during childbirth. Other reports say that the ghost of a tall man (believed to be James Irvine) still wanders the property.{{cite news |title=Orange County's Most Haunted Places |url=https://www.cbsnews.com/losangeles/news/orange-countys-most-haunted-places/ |publisher=CBS Los Angeles |date=September 30, 2013}}{{cite web |title=Irvine Katie Wheeler Library |url=https://socallandmarks.com/index.php/2021/10/31/irvine-katie-wheeler-library/ |website=SoCal Landmarks|date=31 October 2021 }}
