He is now considered one of the pioneer experts in this field. He fought in Vietnam as a soldier in the United States Army, and subsequently has visited Vietnam for research and scholarly exchange many times and lived continuously in Vietnam for two years in the early 1990s while studying and teaching. He has researched all periods of the Vietnamese past and has developed a particular interest in Vietnamese poetry and how it has changed from generation to generation. In 2015 he received the Phan Châu Trinh Cultural Foundation Prize for Vietnamese Studies in Ho Chi Minh City.{{cite web|url= https://www.quyphanchautrinh.org/giai-phan-chau-trinh/ChiTiet/861/giai-thuong-nam-2008?bc=62&nam=61 |title= Diễn từ nhận giải Việt Nam học (Giáo sư Keith Weller Taylor) |first= Keith Weller |last= Taylor |language= vi |work= Quỹ Văn Hóa Phan Châu Trinh |date= 2015 |access-date= July 23, 2024 |archive-date= July 23, 2024 |archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20240723110421/https://www.quyphanchautrinh.org/giai-phan-chau-trinh/ChiTiet/861/giai-thuong-nam-2008?bc=62&nam=61 |url-status=dead}}{{cite web|url= https://tuoitre.vn/trao-giai-van-hoa-phan-chau-trinh-lan-8-725087.htm |title= Trao giải văn hóa Phan Châu Trinh lần 8 |author= Lam Điền |language= vi |work= Tuổi Trẻ |date= March 25, 2015 |access-date= July 23, 2024 |archive-date= July 23, 2024 |archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20240723110420/https://tuoitre.vn/trao-giai-van-hoa-phan-chau-trinh-lan-8-725087.htm |url-status=live}}
