Style and technique
Ferris uses several main techniques in his work, including spray guns, chunky paint applied with palette knives, and has included the application of oil and pigments to the canvas using his own body.{{Cite journal|last=Chamberlain|first=Colby|date=December 2015|title=Keltie Ferris: Mitchell-Innes & Nash|url=https://www.albany.edu/museum/images/PDF/Ferris_Artforum.jpg|journal=Artforum International|volume=54|issue=4}} His paintings are casualist,{{Cite web|title=ABSTRACT PAINTING: The New Casualists|url=https://brooklynrail.org/2011/06/artseen/abstract-painting-the-new-casualists|last=Butler|first=Sharon L.|date=June 3, 2011|website=brooklynrail.org|language=en-US|access-date=Sep 10, 2020}} reference such disparate sources as pointillism, pixelation, and graffiti,{{Cite news|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/18/arts/design/review-keltie-ferris-woman-warrior.html|title=Review: Keltie Ferris, Woman Warrior|date=2015-09-17|work=The New York Times|access-date=2018-04-09|language=en-US|issn=0362-4331}} and invite the viewer to question what it is they are seeing and to put the images together for themselves.{{Cite news|url=https://www.artinamericamagazine.com/news-features/interviews/paintingrsquos-full-arsenal-an-interview-with-keltie-ferris/|title=Painting's Full Arsenal: An Interview with Keltie Ferris - Art in America|work=Art in America|access-date=2018-04-09|language=en-US}}
According to Andrew Goldstein, writing for Artnet, "Ferris became famous for making abstract paintings from meltingly bright blurs of color that seemed both pixelated and powered by the force of their own vibrant chromatic electricity," before adopting the style of using his body, while "wearing a hardy denim outfit," to create paintings around 2014.{{cite news |last1=Goldstein |first1=Andrew |title=10 of the Most Eye-Opening Artworks at Art Basel Miami Beach |url=https://news.artnet.com/art-world/art-basel-miami-beach-2017-best-2-1173224 |access-date=17 June 2021 |work=Artnet |date=December 8, 2017}} By 2017, he had resumed using a traditional paintbrush. In 2021, Tausif Noor writes for The New York Times about Ferris's exhibition “FEEEEELING”: "Rejecting a hard disciplinary line between drawing and painting, Ferris revels in that more exhilarating space that emerges between mediums, which allows instinct and intuition to take the lead. [...] Ferris’s ingeniousness, however, is more of a self-critical expansion of his own techniques than a gaze back at the canon, making his style resolutely one of a kind."{{cite news |title=5 Art Gallery Shows to See Right Now |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/20/arts/design/5-art-gallery-shows-to-see-right-now.html |access-date=17 June 2021 |work=The New York Times |date=May 20, 2021}}
