The symbols on the schools crest are a reference to the miracles of Saint Mungo.{{Citation needed|date=April 2023}}. When the school was a Grammar School, it had a school song in Latin which began "Assurgit Skidda stabilis / Mons nunquam non durabilis", referring to the nearby Skiddaw.
Two pupils of the school were killed on 24 May 2010 when a coach returning from a school trip was involved in a traffic collision on the A66 road.{{cite news|url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/cumbria/8702409.stm |title=Two pupils and man killed in Cumbria bus crash named | work=BBC News | date=25 May 2010}}
