History

Initially incorporated in 1917, the club was founded by a Britisher Napier McDonald and assumed the current name after Indian independence in 1947. The club used to play its matches at the premises of the Bhukailash Rajbari in Kidderpore, before shifting its current base to the Kolkata Maidan. The club came into limelight during the coaching days of Achyut Banerjee, who managed Kidderpore in the 1950s–60s.{{cite web|url=https://www.prohor.in/robbaranda-prasenjit-datta-paye-paye-maidane-12|title=ময়দানের তৃতীয় নয়ন|trans-title=The Third Eye of Kolkata Maidan|website=prohor.in|publisher=Prohor News|first1=Prasenjit|last1=Dutta|language=bn|location=Kolkata|date=22 May 2022|access-date=21 October 2022|archive-date=5 February 2023|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230205002504/https://www.prohor.in/robbaranda-prasenjit-datta-paye-paye-maidane-12}} They took part in numerous editions of IFA Shield; at the 1985 tournament, they faced Uruguayan champions Peñarol.{{Cite web|url=https://www.rsssf.org/tablesi/india85.html#ifashield|title=India 1985 – Regional Leagues: IFA Shield|website=RSSSF|date=30 May 2013|first1=Ian|last1=King|first2=Neil|last2=Morrison|first3=Piet|last3=Veroeveren|first4=Mark|last4=Cruickshank|archive-date=7 October 2022|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20221007120420/https://www.rsssf.org/tablesi/india85.html#ifashield}}{{cite web|url=https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1680138656089255937.html|title=𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐎𝐖𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐊 {{!}} 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐂 𝐚𝐥𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝐦𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐛 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐲!|website=threadreaderapp.com|date=16 July 2023|access-date=16 July 2023|publisher=@ebfchistory (East Bengal Club official fanbase)|archive-date=16 July 2023|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230716052759/https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1680138656089255937.html}}
