Reception

Critical response to Killing Kennedy was mixed, with The New York Times writing that the book was at times disappointing but that it "picks up strength as it heads for its date with destiny".{{cite news|title=Unabashed in the Face of Tragedy|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/11/books/killing-kennedy-by-bill-oreilly-and-martin-dugard.html?_r=0/|newspaper=New York Times|access-date=7 December 2012|first=Janet|last=Maslin|date=October 10, 2012}} The book has been criticized for a "lack of citation and occasional 'literary liberties'".{{Attribution needed|date=March 2025}}{{Citation needed|date=March 2025}}

O'Reilly has stated that he and Dugard wrote the book to be "fun" and "to get people engaged with their country".{{cite news|title=Bill O'Reilly returns to presidential assassinations with his new book 'Killing Kennedy'|url=http://www.csmonitor.com/Books/chapter-and-verse/2012/1004/Bill-O-Reilly-returns-to-presidential-assassinations-with-his-new-book-Killing-Kennedy|newspaper=Christian Science Monitor|access-date=21 December 2012}} The book sold 118,000 copies in its first week.{{cite web|title=Riordan, O'Reilly Post Huge Debuts|url=http://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/industry-news/publisher-news/article/54298-riordan-o-reilly-post-huge-debuts.html|work=publishersweekly.com|publisher=Publishers Weekly|access-date=May 26, 2013|author=Publishers Weekly|author-link=Publishers Weekly|date=October 10, 2012}}

Another passage where O'Reilly claims he was present outside the Florida home of alleged conspirator George de Mohrenschildt when he committed suicide has been shown by several sources to be false, as he was known not to be in the state at the time.{{cite web|title=O'Reilly Lied About Suicide Of JFK Assassination Figure, Former Colleagues Say|website=Media Matters for America |url=http://mediamatters.org/blog/2015/02/24/oreilly-lied-about-suicide-of-jfk-assassination/202655|access-date=25 February 2015}}
