Kindness Club

The Kindness Club is a humane education organization. It was founded by Aida Flemming in Fredericton, New Brunswick, in 1959.

Origin and growth

In 1957 Aida Flemming, the wife of New Brunswick premier Hugh John Flemming, sponsored a children's essay contest in Carleton County, New Brunswick on the topic: "What is being done now for the protection of animals and what more could be done?"{{Cite news| pages = 5| last = Mungovan| first = Deirdre| title = Kindness is personal crusade of Aida Flemming| work = The Brandon Sun| location = Brandon, Manitoba| accessdate = 17 October 2016| date = 22 August 1961| via = Newspapers.com|url = https://www.newspapers.com/clip/7025845/crusade_of_aida_flemming/}}{{free access}} Encouraged by the response, she launched the Kindness Club in 1959 with an article in the magazine Atlantic Advocate proposing a club for children between the ages of 5 and 13.{{Cite news| volume = 11| issue = 1| pages = 10–13| last = Atkinson| first = Carolyn| title = Aida Flemming: The later years| work = The Officers' Quarterly| date = Winter 1995}} The organization was based on the principle of reverence for life, the ethical concept developed by Albert Schweitzer, and when the club grew into an international organization Schweitzer accepted Flemming's invitation to act as its honorary president.{{Cite web| title = Fonds MC289 - Kindness Club| work = Council of Archives New Brunswick| url = https://search.canbarchives.ca/kindness-club|accessdate=27 October 2016}}{{Cite news| pages = 22| title = Dr. Schweizer patron for Kindness Club| work = Ottawa Journal| url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/7053393/schweitzer_patron| via = Newspapers.com|date = 19 November 1962}}{{free access}} By 1962 branches had been established in the United States, New Zealand and England. Members pledged "to be kind to animals (as well as people) and to speak and act in defense of all helpless creatures". An early member of the Kindness Club was the environmental activist Paul Watson, who has credited the club with teaching him to "respect and defend animals".{{Cite web| last = Watson| first = Paul| title = How real Conservatives view the Canadian seal slaughter| work = Sea Shepherd Conservation Society| date = 14 March 2007| accessdate = 27 October 2016| url = http://www.seashepherd.fr/news-and-media/editorial-070314-1.html| archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20161028084821/http://www.seashepherd.fr/news-and-media/editorial-070314-1.html| archive-date = 28 October 2016| url-status = dead}}

The Humane Society of the United States took on the responsibility for clubs in the United States while the World Federation for the Protection of Animals in Switzerland oversaw the other international chapters.{{Cite book| publisher = McClelland and Stewart| isbn = 978-0-7710-8603-8| last = Trueman| first = Stuart| title = The fascinating world of New Brunswick| location = Toronto| date = 1973| page = [https://archive.org/details/fascinatingworld0000true/page/101 101]| url-access = registration| url = https://archive.org/details/fascinatingworld0000true/page/101}} By 1984, the club's 25th anniversary year, it had chapters in 22 countries.{{Cite news| title = News digest| work = Vegetarian Times| date = August 1984|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=LgcAAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA10|page=10|accessdate=27 October 2016}}

In the 21st century

In 2009, the Kindness Club's 50th anniversary year, most of its members were in Canada. Continuing to base itself on Schweitzer's reverence for life philosophy, the club promotes humane education for children and contributes to local initiatives including subsidized spay/neuter programs and donations of pet food to food banks.{{Cite news| pages = C8| last = Sheppard| first = Cindy| title = Kindness Club still teaches kids to be good to animals| work = The Daily Gleaner| location = Fredericton, N.B.| accessdate = 27 October 2016| date = 5 February 2009| url = http://www.fredfdn.ca/kindness-club-still-teaches-kids-to-be-good-to-animals/| archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20161029043542/http://www.fredfdn.ca/kindness-club-still-teaches-kids-to-be-good-to-animals/| archive-date = 29 October 2016| url-status = dead}}
