Overview
Kinyara Power Station is owned and operated by Kinyara Sugar Limited, the second-largest sugar manufacturer in Uganda. The power station was designed and built around the sugar manufacturing plant of Kinyara Sugar Ltd. The fibrous residue from the process of crushing sugar cane, known as bagasse, is burnt to heat water in boilers and produce steam. The steam is pressurized and used to drive turbines which then generate electricity. The excess heat is used in the sugar manufacturing process. {{asof|September 2009}}, the power station was capable of producing a maximum of 14.5MW of electricity.{{cite web|title=Sugar Company Distribute Its Power To National Grid|url=http://ugandaradionetwork.com/a/story.php?s=36761|date=11 September 2011|accessdate=14 July 2014|last=Birungi|first=Machrine|publisher=Uganda Radio Network}}
{{asof|October 2009}}, the power station sold 4MW to the national grid.{{cite web|url=http://ugandaradionetwork.com/a/story.php?s=24563&PHPSESSID=471526ff36f3aa131850657d1ea5cd95|title=Maintenance Work At Kinyara Sugar Factory Disrupts Power Supplies| first=Jonathan |last=Akweteireho|date=20 October 2009| publisher=Uganda Radio Network|accessdate=14 July 2014}} Plans are underway to expand power production to 40MW by 2015. Of this, 22MW was expected to be sold to the national grid and the rest used by the sugar manufacturing complex at Kinyara.{{cite web| url=http://www.newvision.co.ug/news/645161-mps-considering-sh140b-energy-sector-loans.html | title=MPs Considering ShS140 Billion Energy Sector Loans |date=17 July 2013 |access-date=12 January 2015 |first=Moses |last=Walubiri | newspaper=New Vision |location=Kampala}}{{cite web |access-date=16 May 2015 |date=2 February 2013 |last=Barigaba |url=https://www.theeastafrican.co.ke/business/Albertine-region-to-become-Uganda-energy-hub-/-/2560/1682606/-/n0t8gg/-/index.html|title=Oil-Rich Albertine Region To Become Uganda's Energy Hub |
