History

As German immigrants arrived at New Orleans they settled in Osyka, Mississippi and overflowed south into Louisiana. The land across the Louisiana state line was not a part of Mississippi and could not be called Osyka. The community took the name Kirkville and is named after Lawrence Alexander Kirk, a railroad surveyor that owned a large portion of the land.{{cite web|author=Debbie Cutrer Powers|url=http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/tangipahoa/cemeteries/german.txt |title=GERMAN CEMETERY, Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana|publisher=LaGenWeb Archives |accessdate=2019-08-21}}{{cite web|author=Carol Monahan|url=https://www.iajgsjewishcemeteryproject.org/louisiana-la/kirksvile.html |title=KIRKSVILE: Tangipahoa Parish|publisher=International Jewish Cemetery Project |accessdate=2019-08-21}}
