Kolbrún made her first Icelandic team, as a 17-year-old teen, at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Kolbrún shortened her program on her second Olympic appearance, swimming only in the 100 m butterfly. She edged out Hong Kong's Sze Hang Yu to pick up a sixth seed by 0.09 of a second in 1:02.33.
