History

The village was first mentioned in 1444 as Zwaech, and means (cattle) pasture belonging to Kollum.{{cite web|url=https://etymologiebank.nl/trefwoord/kollumerzwaag |title=Kollumerzwaag - (geografische naam) |website=Etymologiebank |access-date=1 April 2022 |language=nl}} Kollumersweach developed on a clay ridge from which the heath was cultivated during the 11th and 12th century. It developed into a linear settlement. Originally there were two hamlets: Zwagerveen and Zandbulten. In 1971, they were merged and renamed to Kollumerzwaag.{{cite web|url=https://www.plaatsengids.nl/kollumerzwaag |title=Kollumerzwaag |website=Plaatsengids |access-date=1 April 2022 |language=nl}} In 2023, the spelling was changed to Kollumersweach.{{cite web |date=10 December 2022 |title=22 dorpen in Noardeast-Fryslân krijgen op 1 januari 2023 een nieuwe Friese naam |trans-title=22 villages in Noardeast-Fryslân will receive a new Frisian name on 1 January 2023 |url=https://www.rtvnof.nl/22-dorpen-in-noardeast-fryslan-krijgen-op-1-januari-2023-een-nieuwe-friese-naam/595397/ |access-date=7 April 2023 |website=RTV NOF |language=nl}}{{cite web |title=Friese namen |trans-title=Frisian names |url=https://namen.taalunie.org/friese-namen |access-date=7 April 2023 |website=Taalunie |language=nl}}

The spire was replaced in 1872 and was altered in 1960 during restoration.{{cite web|url=https://www.dbnl.org/tekst/sten009monu06_01/sten009monu06_01_0097.php |title=Kollumerzwaag |author=Ronald Stenvert & Sabine Broekhoven |year=2000 |publisher=Waanders |location=Zwolle |isbn=90 400 9476 4 |language=nl |access-date=1 April 2022}}
