The town is notable as the construction site of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant. These wind turbines have a total capacity of 2000 MW and represent one of the largest wind farms in India.{{cite web |author=collective, 01:53 PM |url=http://www.thesouthasian.org/archives/2007/koodankulam_must_be_a_symbol_o.html |title=Koodankulam Must be a Symbol of Prosperity |publisher=The South Asian |date=13 May 2007 |accessdate=26 March 2012 |archive-date=1 May 2012 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120501204825/http://www.thesouthasian.org/archives/2007/koodankulam_must_be_a_symbol_o.html |url-status=dead }}
