Exile to the Cellular Jail
At the end of the Anglo-Manipur War in the year 1891, which resulted in the British victory, Kulachandra Singh and other 22 Manipuri freedom fighters were exiled to the then British penal colony in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. At the time of their exile, the Cellular Jail (Kalapani) was about to be built in the island. So, Kulachandra Singh and the other 22 men were imprisoned on the Mount Manipur (Mount Harriet), in the present day South Andaman district.{{Cite web |date=20 October 2021 |title=Explained: Why a peak in Andaman and Nicobar Islands is now named after Manipur |url=https://indianexpress.com/article/explained/andaman-and-nicobar-islands-mount-harriet-mount-manipur-7581032/ |access-date=13 September 2022 |website=The Indian Express |language=en}}{{Cite web |date=17 October 2021 |title=Mount Harriet in Andaman to be named Mount Manipur in tribute to freedom fighters |url=https://www.hindustantimes.com/cities/others/mount-harriet-in-andaman-to-be-named-mount-manipur-in-tribute-to-freedom-fighters-101634462840801.html |access-date=13 September 2022 |website=Hindustan Times |language=en}}{{Cite web |last=NEWS |first=NE NOW |date=17 October 2021 |title=Assam CM welcomes move to rename Mount Harriet in Andaman as Mount Manipur |url=http://nenow.in/north-east-news/assam/assam-cm-welcomes-move-to-rename-mount-harriet-in-andaman-as-mount-manipur.html |access-date=13 September 2022 |website=NORTHEAST NOW |language=en-US}}{{Cite web |last=NEWS |first=NE NOW |date=16 October 2021 |title=Tribute to Manipuri freedom fighters: Mount Harriet in Kalapani to be renamed as Mount Manipur |url=http://nenow.in/north-east-news/manipur/tribute-to-manipuri-freedom-fighters-mount-harriet-in-kalapani-to-be-renamed-as-mount-manipur.html |access-date=13 September 2022 |website=NORTHEAST NOW |language=en-US}}{{Cite news |last=Singh |first=Bikash |title=Manipur breaks into celebration as Centre renames Andaman's 'Mount Harriet' as 'Mount Manipur' |work=The Economic Times |url=https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/india/manipur-breaks-into-celebration-as-centre-renames-andamans-mount-harriet-as-mount-manipur/articleshow/87086747.cms?from=mdr |access-date=13 September 2022}}{{Cite web |title=Mount Harriet to be called Mount Manipur: Amit Shah |url=https://www.ifp.co.in/10401/mount-harriet-to-be-called-mount-manipur-amit-shah |access-date=13 September 2022 |website=Imphal Free Press |language=en}}
