FIFA suspension

Contrary to the road map established by FIFA and the AFC, the Kuwaiti Public Authority for Youth and Sport continued to interfere. Elections were held on 9 October in direct violation of the FIFA Executive Committee's May 2007 decision to the contrary. As a consequence, the committee recommended to the FIFA Executive Committee that the Kuwait Football Association be suspended.{{Cite web |url=https://www.fifa.com/aboutfifa/federation/releases/newsid=625074.html |title=Priority given to protection of FIFA principles and members 29 October 2007 FIFA.com |access-date=29 October 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110306170022/http://www.fifa.com/aboutfifa/federation/releases/newsid=625074.html |archive-date=6 March 2011 |url-status=dead }} Kuwait's football federation board resigned days after world governing body FIFA suspended the Persian Gulf state.{{Cite web |url=http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=478001&cc=4716 |title=Kuwait federation board quit over FIFA ban www.soccernet.com 1 November 2007 |access-date=21 October 2009 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110604105856/http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=478001&cc=4716 |archive-date=4 June 2011 |url-status=dead }} The suspension was lifted after the federation said it will ratify new statutes to prevent government interference in the sport as demanded by FIFA. "Otherwise FIFA will immediately suspend the (federation) again," FIFA said in a statement.[https://www.usatoday.com/sports/soccer/2007-11-09-127325827_x.htm FIFA lifts ban on Kuwait after it pledges to prevent government interference USA Today 11 September 2007] The suspension was conditionally lifted and extended by the FIFA Congress in June 2009.{{Cite web |url=https://www.fifa.com/aboutfifa/federation/bodies/media/newsid=1064818.html |title=Brazil 2014 host cities confirmed FIFA.com 31 May 2009 |access-date=29 October 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110615061336/http://www.fifa.com/aboutfifa/federation/bodies/media/newsid=1064818.html |archive-date=15 June 2011 |url-status=dead }} FIFA was closely monitoring the situation within Kuwait.[https://kuwait-onlinecasinos.com/key-decisions-reached-in-rio/ Key decisions reached in Rio kuwait-onlinecasinos.com 31 September 2009] {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110615060937/http://www.fifa.com/aboutfifa/federation/bodies/media/newsid%3D1109930.html |date=June 15, 2011 }}

On 16 October 2015, FIFA suspended Kuwait and all remaining results from AFC Asian Cup and FIFA World Cup qualification were added as forfeits while all Kuwaiti teams that were participating in international competitions were withdrawn.{{Cite web |url=https://www.fifa.com/governance/news/y=2015/m=10/news=suspension-of-the-kuwait-football-association-2717726.html |title=Suspension of the Kuwait Football Association FIFA.com 16 October 2015 |access-date=9 December 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171210015545/https://www.fifa.com/governance/news/y=2015/m=10/news=suspension-of-the-kuwait-football-association-2717726.html |archive-date=10 December 2017 |url-status=dead }} Kuwait tried to get the suspension lifted at the 66th FIFA Congress but this was rejected and therefore from the earlier announcement on 27 April 2016, the hosting of the Arabian Gulf Cup tournament was moved to Qatar.{{Cite web |url=https://www.fifa.com/about-fifa/news/y=2016/m=5/news=fifa-congress-drives-football-forward-first-female-secretary-general-a-2790957.html |title=FIFA Congress drives football forward, first female secretary general appointed FIFA.com 13 May 2016 |access-date=9 December 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171107004428/https://www.fifa.com/about-fifa/news/y=2016/m=5/news=fifa-congress-drives-football-forward-first-female-secretary-general-a-2790957.html |archive-date=7 November 2017 |url-status=dead }} The suspension was eventually lifted on 6 December 2017 after Kuwait's adoption of a new sports law.{{Cite web |url=https://www.fifa.com/governance/news/y=2017/m=12/news=suspension-of-the-kuwait-football-association-lifted-2922929.html |title=Suspension of the Kuwait Football Association lifted FIFA.com 6 December 2017 |access-date=9 December 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171207012930/http://www.fifa.com/governance/news/y=2017/m=12/news=suspension-of-the-kuwait-football-association-lifted-2922929.html |archive-date=7 December 2017 |url-status=dead }}
