Kvikne is a former municipality that was part of the old Hedmark county, Norway. The {{convert|1153|km2|adj=on}} municipality of Kvikne existed from 1838 until its dissolution in 1966 when it was split between the present-day municipalities of Tynset (in what is now Innlandet county) and Rennebu (in what is now Trøndelag county). The administrative centre of the municipality was the village of Kvikne where Kvikne Church is located.{{Cite encyclopedia |title=Kvikne |encyclopedia=Store norske leksikon |publisher=Kunnskapsforlaget |url=https://snl.no/Kvikne |date=2021-03-15 |editor-last=Mæhlum |editor-first=Lars |language=Norwegian |accessdate=2022-01-30}}
Copper mining and soapstone quarries were historically significant industries in the municipality.
History
Kvikne was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt law). During the 1960s, there were many municipal mergers across Norway due to the work of the Schei Committee. The municipality of Kvikne was dissolved on 1 January 1966 and its lands were divided into two. The {{convert|952|km2|adj=on}} Kvikne parish in the south (population: 664) was merged into Tynset Municipality in Hedmark county and the {{convert|201|km2|adj=on}} Innset parish in the north (population: 420) was incorporated into Rennebu Municipality in Sør-Trøndelag county. A few years later in 1970, the border was adjusted again with the Garlia farm (population: 5) being transferred from Tynset to Rennebu.{{Cite book |last=Jukvam |first=Dag |year=1999 |title=Historisk oversikt over endringer i kommune- og fylkesinndelingen |url=http://www.ssb.no/emner/00/90/rapp_9913/rapp_9913.pdf |publisher=Statistisk sentralbyrå |language=no |isbn=9788253746845}}{{Cite web |date=1965-04-30 |title=Forskrift om sammenslåing av Kvikne og Tynset kommuner, Hedmark |url=https://lovdata.no/dokument/LF/forskrift/1965-04-30-5 |access-date=2022-01-30 |website=Lovdata.no |language=Norwegian}}
=Name=
The municipality (originally the parish) is named Kvikne ({{langx|non|Kviknar}}) which is an old name for the area. The name probably comes from the word {{wikt-lang|non|kvikr}} which means "alive" or "lively". The name may be referring to the quick clay in the area.{{Cite book |last=Rygh |first=Oluf |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=SZMOAAAAYAAJ |title=Norske gaardnavne: Hedmarkens amt |date=1900 |publisher=W. Churches
The Church of Norway had two parishes ({{lang|no|sokn}}) within the municipality of Kvikne. It was part of the Nord-Østerdal prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Hamar.

Government
While it existed, this municipality was responsible for primary education (through 10th grade), outpatient health services, senior citizen services, unemployment, social services, zoning, economic development, and municipal roads. During its existence, this municipality was governed by a municipal council of directly elected representatives. The mayor was indirectly elected by a vote of the municipal council.{{Cite encyclopedia |title=kommunestyre |encyclopedia=Store norske leksikon |publisher=Kunnskapsforlaget |url=https://snl.no/kommunestyre |access-date=2023-01-01 |date=2022-09-20 |editor-last=Hansen |editor-first=Tore |language=no |editor2-last=Vabo |editor2-first=Signy Irene}}
