"L'amore è femmina" ({{IPA|it|laˈmoːre ɛ fˈfemmina}}; {{langx|en|"Love is female"}}) is a song recorded by Italian singer-songwriter Nina Zilli for her second studio album of the same title. It was produced by Michele Canova{{Cite web|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131109144010/http://www.rai.it/dl/portali/site/articolo/ContentItem-53c755cd-78d5-42b7-ac2f-db9056108e6d.html |archive-date=9 November 2013 |publisher=RAI |language=it |access-date=13 May 2012 |title=Nina Zilli - L'amore è femmina |url=http://www.rai.it/dl/portali/site/articolo/ContentItem-53c755cd-78d5-42b7-ac2f-db9056108e6d.html |url-status=dead }} and written by Zilli herself with American songwriter Charlie Mason (later won the Eurovision Song Contest 2014) and Swedish songwriters Christian Rabb, Kristoffer Sjökvist and Frida Molander. The song was selected by the Italian Broadcaster RAI to represent Italy in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012, which was held in Baku, Azerbaijan.{{Cite web | url = http://www.escdaily.com/baku-2012-italy-change-to-lamore-e-femmina/ | title = Baku 2012: Italy change to L'Amore È Femmina | access-date = 13 May 2012 | date = 13 March 2012}}

During the contest, it was performed in English-Italian language, titled "L'amore è femmina (Out of Love)".{{Cite web | url = http://www.esctoday.com/news/read/18743 | publisher = ESCToday.com | access-date = 13 May 2012 | title = Part twenty-eight. Background and composition

The song was originally written in English by Christian Rabb, Kristoffer Sjökvist, Frida Molander and Charlie Mason. A demo of the song was later sent to Zilli's manager, Fabrizio Giannini.{{Cite web|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120508062608/http://www.radiomontecarlo.net/it/rmc_world/speciali/nina-zilli-amore-femmina |archive-date=8 May 2012 |title=Nina Zilli L'amore è femmina |url=http://www.radiomontecarlo.net/it/rmc_world/speciali/nina-zilli-amore-femmina |access-date=13 May 2012 |language=it |publisher=Radio Monte Carlo |url-status=dead }} After hearing the song, Zilli translated the lyrics in Italian and recorded it with the title "L'amore è femmina". The song was chosen as the sixth track of her second studio album, named after the song itself.{{Cite web | url = http://videodrome-xl.blogautore.repubblica.it/2012/03/09/lamore-femmina-di-nina-zilli/ | work = la Repubblica XL | publisher = Gruppo Editoriale L'Espresso | language = it | date = 9 March 2012 | author = Emanuela Del Frate | title = L'amore è femmina di Nina Zilli | access-date = 13 May 2012}}

Explaining the meaning of the song, Zilli claimed that the lyrics are written from the point of view of a woman telling her man that he should not expect anything from her if he acts "like a stupid". Zilli also stated that the song contains references to sensual love, specifying that she didn't intend to write a sort of new "Material Girl".{{Cite web | url = http://www.sorrisi.com/2012/03/16/nina-zilli-benvenuti-nel-mio-mondo-vintage-colorato-e-un-po-folle/ | work = TV Sorrisi e Canzoni | language = it | access-date = 13 May 2012 | date = 16 March 2012 | title = Nina Zilli, Benvenuti nel mio mondo vintage, colorato e un po' folle | author = Cinzia Marongiu | url-status = dead | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20121114175555/http://www.sorrisi.com/2012/03/16/nina-zilli-benvenuti-nel-mio-mondo-vintage-colorato-e-un-po-folle/ | archive-date = 14 November 2012 }}

Critical reception

OndaRock.it's Claudio Fabretti described the song as "an essay of muffled vocalism, counterpointed with a lot of choruses and wind instruments on a rocking rhythm".{{Cite web | url = http://www.ondarock.it/recensioni/2012_ninazilli_lamorefemmina.htm | publisher = OndaRock.it | language = it | author = Claudo Fabretti | access-date = 13 May 2012 | title = Nina Zilli - L'amore è femmina | date = 15 March 2012}}
