L1, also known by its original name {{Lang|nl|i=no|Omroep Limburg}} ({{lit|Limburg Broadcasting}}), is a regional public broadcaster in the Netherlands, specifically serving the province of Limburg. Founded in 1988 to replace the {{Ill|Regionale Omroep Zuid|nl}} (ROZ), the station rebranded to L1 in 1999 following a merger with the commercial broadcaster {{Ill|TV8 (Netherlands)|nl|TV8|lt=TV8 Limburg}}.
History
On 24 December 1945, the {{Ill|Regionale Omroep Zuid|nl}} (ROZ) – the first regional radio station in the Netherlands – began its broadcasts in Limburg.{{cite web |title=Geschiedenis omroep |url=https://www.l1.nl/over-l1/geschiedenis-omroep |website=L1 |access-date=12 April 2024 |language=nl}}{{cite web |title=Limburgse regionale omroep bestaat 75 jaar |url=https://www.l1nieuws.nl/nieuws/1141329/limburgse-regionale-omroep-bestaat-75-jaar |website=L1 Nieuws |access-date=12 April 2024 |language=nl |date=24 December 2020}} The station operated under the umbrella of the Dutch Radio Union (NFU) and, from 1969, the {{Lang|nl|i=no|Nederlandse Omroep Stichting}} (NOS). In 1988, the regional broadcasting services were detached from the NOS, following the implementation of the Media Act.{{cite web |title=L1, de oudste regionale omroep, opent jubileumjaar |url=https://www.stichtingrpo.nl/l1-de-oudste-regionale-omroep-opent-jubileumjaar/ |website=RPO |access-date=12 April 2024 |language=nl-NL |date=21 December 2020}} The ROZ was then dissolved and replaced by the newly founded {{Lang|nl|i=no|Omroep Limburg}} as Limburg's regional public broadcaster.
In 1997, the commercial regional television station {{Ill|TV8 (Netherlands)|nl|TV8|lt=TV8 Limburg}} was established. Later that year, {{Lang|nl|i=no|Omroep Limburg}} also began broadcasting on television. Due to cable network limitations, the channels shared the same frequency: {{Lang|nl|i=no|Omroep Limburg}} aired from 7:15 to 19:15, while TV8 Limburg took over during the evening and early morning hours.{{cite thesis |last=Földešiová |first=Denisa |date=2009 |title=De Nederlandse en Tsjechische televisiezenders en hun uitzendschema's |url=https://theses.cz/id/rqaaqz/682255 |degree=Master's |page=24 |publisher=Palacký University Olomouc}} Because of the legal and practical challenges posed by the shared television frequency, the two broadcasters merged in June 1999 to form L1.
