History
The creator of LEXO, Hongbin "Bill" Ma, is a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering and director of the Center for Thermal Management at the University of Missouri.{{Cite news|url=http://engineering.missouri.edu/person/mah/|title=Ma, Hongbin "Bill" - Engineering|work=Engineering|access-date=2017-03-07|language=en-US}} After noticing how often he forgot coffee while waiting for it to cool, Ma began working on a “cup with constant temperature” in the summer of 2015.{{Cite news|url=http://www.columbiatribune.com/arts_life/food/mug-takes-coffee-from-piping-hot-to-drinkable-quickly/article_3ff1f528-ecbd-58d6-8c1e-be9a149ed05f.html|title=Mug takes coffee from piping-hot to drinkable quickly|last=Worley|first=Karen|work=Columbia Daily Tribune|access-date=2017-03-07|language=en}}{{Cite news|url=http://www.stltoday.com/news/local/education/it-s-like-the-yeti-but-better-and-a-mizzou/article_1ecbf150-0222-5f62-89df-ae68ee5fb4bf.html|title=It's like the Yeti, but better — and a Mizzou professor made it|last=Jost|first=Ashley|work=stltoday.com|access-date=2017-03-07|language=en}} The LEXO was released to the general public in December 2016.
Design
The LEXO uses bio-based phase-change and advanced heat transfer materials to absorb the initial heat of the beverage and cool it to a more drinkable temperature.{{Cite news|url=https://lexolife.com/about-lexo/|title=About {{!}} LEXO {{!}} This is Not Your Standard Tumbler|work=LEXO|access-date=2017-03-07|language=en-US}} When the temperature begins to drop, the LEXO slowly releases the stored heat back into the drink.{{Cite news|url=http://engineering.missouri.edu/2016/11/mu-professor-patents-improvements-mugs-swamp-coolers/|title=MU professor patents improvements for mugs, swamp coolers|date=2016-11-07|work=Engineering|access-date=2017-03-07|language=en-US}} The LEXO can also insulate cold liquids.{{Cite web|url=http://munews.missouri.edu/news-releases/2017/0105-new-coffee-mug-holds-liquids-at-optimal-temps-for-8-hours-leads-to-patent-for-mu-engineer/|title=MU News Bureau {{!}} MU News Bureau|website=munews.missouri.edu|access-date=2017-03-07}}
