History
File:Portrait of Juan Bautista de Anza (Painted by Fray Orci; 1774, Mexico City).jpg, namesake of the lake.]]
The lake was created by the construction of the C L Tilden Park Dam in 1938.{{Cite web |url=http://www.water.ca.gov/damsafety/docs/Reservoir2010.pdf |title=Dams With a Different Reservoir Name |publisher=California Department of Water Resources |access-date=September 27, 2012 |archive-date=October 5, 2012 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20121005023239/http://www.water.ca.gov/damsafety/docs/Reservoir2010.pdf |url-status=dead }} It was named by the East Bay Regional Park Board in honor of Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza.{{cite book |first=Erwin |last=Gudde |author2=William Bright |title=California Place Names |year=2004 |edition=Fourth |publisher=University of California Press |isbn=0-520-24217-3}}
Lake Anza was constructed in 1938 with financing by the Public Works Administration (PWA) as a recreational lake while also providing water to the Tilden Park golf course. While the golf course no longer uses Lake Anza water, remnants of the water system remain. The beach and stone bath house were constructed by the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The original WPA stone bath house burned down in the 1960s and was replaced with the current facility.{{Cite web|url=https://livingnewdeal.org/projects/lake-anza-tilden-park-kensington-ca/|title=Living New Deal: Lake Anza|access-date=2016-04-02|archive-date=2018-07-14|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180714130118/https://livingnewdeal.org/projects/lake-anza-tilden-park-kensington-ca/|url-status=dead}}
