The village was first mentioned around 1260 as Lamswerd, and means "land on water belonging to Lam(bert)".{{cite web|url=https://etymologiebank.nl/trefwoord/lamswaarde |title=Lamswaarde - (geografische naam) |website=Etymologiebank|access-date=20 April 2022 |language=nl}} Lamswaarde is a road village which developed in the 13th century near the outpost of the Cistercian monastery Baudeloo. The outpost was destroyed in the late 16th century during the Eighty Years' War. The village was flooded in 1578. 1615, a new dike was constructed around the Oostvogel and the land was poldered.{{cite book|url=https://dbnl.org/tekst/sten009monu09_01/sten009monu09_01_0059.php |title=Lamswaarde |author=Piet van Cruyningen & Ronald Stenvert| year=2003 |publisher=Waanders |location=Zwolle |isbn=90 400 8830 6 |access-date=20 April 2022 |language=nl}}
