The Legacy features a cantilever low wing, a two-seats-in-side-by-side configuration enclosed cockpit under a bubble canopy, fixed or retractable tricycle landing gear and a single engine in tractor configuration.Tacke, Willi; Marino Boric; et al: World Directory of Light Aviation 2015-16, p. 113. The aircraft is made from vacuum-formed composite sandwiches. Its {{convert|7.8|m|ft|1|abbr=on}} span wing employs a Cole CG10 airfoil at the wing root and a Cole GC11 airfoil at the wingtip. The wing has an area of {{convert|7.6|m2|sqft|abbr=on}} and mounts flaps. The aircraft can accept engines of {{convert|200|to|310|hp|kW|0|abbr=on}}. The standard engine used is the {{convert|310|hp|kW|0|abbr=on}} Continental IO-550 but engines as small as the {{convert|200|hp|kW|0|abbr=on}} Lycoming IO-360 four-stroke powerplant can be fitted.{{Cite web|url=http://www.ae.illinois.edu/m-selig/ads/aircraft.html|title=The Incomplete Guide to Airfoil Usage|accessdate=3 January 2012|last=Lednicer|first=David|year=2010|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20100420012244/http://www.ae.illinois.edu/m-selig/ads/aircraft.html|archive-date=20 April 2010|url-status=dead}}

In May 2016, Lancair announced that the company was ending production of new Legacy aircraft kits due to the significant investments that would have been needed to continue manufacturing. The company sold the line in 2017 to Mark and Conrad Huffstutler, who now build the design as Lancair International, LLC, in Uvalde, Texas.{{cite web|url=http://www.lancair.com/the-end-of-a-legacy/|publisher=Lancair|accessdate=29 July 2016|date=2 May 2016|title=The End of a "Legacy"...|url-status=dead|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20160724063513/http://www.lancair.com/the-end-of-a-legacy/|archivedate=24 July 2016}}{{cite web|url=http://www.avweb.com/avwebflash/news/Lancair-To-Sell-Legacy-Assets-In-Favor-Of-Evolution-Series-226710-1.html|title=Lancair To Sell Legacy Assets In Favor Of Evolution Series - AVweb flash Article|work=avweb.com|accessdate=30 July 2016}}{{cite news|last=Grady|first=Mary|title=Lancair Brand Under New Ownership|url=http://www.avweb.com/avwebflash/news/Lancair-Brand-Under-New-Ownership-228495-1.html?omhide=true|accessdate=15 February 2017|publisher=AVweb|date=14 February 2017}}

Operators

In 2009 the Colombian Air Force ordered 25 modified Legacy FGs to be used as basic trainers. The aircraft feature 15% more wing area than the standard Legacy FG wing, leading-edge cuffs and a ventral fin to improve stability and low-speed handling along with a reshaped vertical tail and rudder. The aircraft are known as the Lancair Synergy and were delivered as kits for assembly in Colombia. The first Synergy was flown in September 2010.{{cite web|url=http://www.aero-news.net/news/military.cfm?ContentBlockID=cb036b34-2fda-4ea8-b777-6c06c60b775b&Dynamic=1|title=Lancair To Provide Colombian Air Force With Training Aircraft|accessdate=31 July 2010|last=Aero-News Network|date=February 2009}}{{cite web|url=http://www.bendbulletin.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090204/BIZ0102/902040352/1041&nav_category=|title=With new deal, Lancair is flying high|accessdate=31 July 2010|last=Moore|first=Andrew|date=February 2009|url-status=dead|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20120313084053/http://www.bendbulletin.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=%2F20090204%2FBIZ0102%2F902040352%2F1041&nav_category=|archivedate=13 March 2012}}{{Cite news|url=http://www.avweb.com/avwebflash/news/colombian_air_force_lancair_synergy_203405-1.html|title=Colombian Air Force Flies Lancair Synergy|accessdate=11 October 2010|last=Pew|first=Glenn|date=October 2010|work=AvWeb}}
