Last Action Hero is a pinball machine designed by Joe Kaminkow and produced by Data East Pinball. It is based on the motion picture of the same name.

Design

Instead of a typical plunger, the game features an auto plunger shaped like a Ruger Blackhawk .45 caliber pistol that launches the ball into play.{{Cite magazine |date=October 1993 |title=What's new - Last Action Hero |url=https://archive.org/details/play-meter-volume-19-number-11-october-1993/Play%20Meter%20-%20Volume%2019%2C%20Number%2011%20-%20October%201993%20%28Compressed%29/page/218/mode/2up?q=%22last+action+hero%22 |magazine=Play Meter |pages=30, 64-65, 219 |volume=19 |issue=11}} The pinball machine features a shaker motor, two captive balls and a crane toy that can pick up the ball and deliver it to another part of the playfield. The game also includes three magnets under the playfield which sends the ball in different directions; similar to The Addams Family.{{Cite book | title = The Pinball Compendium| author=Michael Shalhoub| publisher = Schiffer |isbn=978-0-7643-4107-6 |date= 2012| pages = 169}}{{Cite web |last=Rignall |first=Jaz |date=2016-12-07 |title=Stern Pinball Arcade PS4 Review: Superb Silverball Simulation |url=https://www.vg247.com/stern-pinball-arcade-ps4-review-superb-silverball-simulation |access-date=2025-03-14 |website=VG247 |language=en}}

Development and release

Reception and legacy

A range of Last Action Hero games were released around the same time for different consoles as part of a heavy merchandising strategy.{{Cite web |last=Davis |first=Justin |date=2014-07-21 |title=Arnold Schwarzenegger's Awesome Video Game Appearances |url=https://www.ign.com/articles/2014/07/21/arnold-schwarzeneggers-awesome-video-game-appearances |access-date=2025-03-14 |website=IGN |language=en}}{{Cite web |last=Weigel |first=George |date=Feb 12, 1993 |title=Some really weird toys shown to 22,000 retailers at N.Y. fair |url=https://www.newspapers.com/image/1092199720/?match=1&terms=%22Last%20Action%20Hero%22%20Pinball |access-date=2025-03-14 |website=The Evening News at Newspapers.com |page=19 |language=en}} However, the film's poor reception may have contributed to its poor performance.{{Cite news |last=Lawler |first=Joe |date=2010-12-15 |title=A haven for Packers lovers |url=https://www.newspapers.com/image/127716156/?match=1&terms=%22Last%20Action%20Hero%22%20Pinball |access-date=2025-03-14 |work=The Des Moines Register |pages=87}} One early review of the game called it, a "stinker game... that let players act out their violent fantasies."{{Cite web |last=Leavitt |first=Marco |date=1994-03-10 |title=Innovations in pinball machine technology just a waste of time |url=https://www.newspapers.com/image/430292566/?match=1&terms=%22Last%20Action%20Hero%22%20Pinball |access-date=2025-03-14 |website=The Daily Utah Chronicle at Newspapers.com |page=9 |language=en}} Last Action Hero is available as a licensed table of both The Pinball Arcade and its spin-off Stern Pinball Arcade for several platforms.
