The place-name 'Lathones' if first attested between 1452 and 1480 as 'Lathone'. The etymology is uncertain but thought to be from Scottish Gaelic 'leth' ('half, side') and 'tòn' ('backside, arse'). If so, the name was once 'leth thòine' ('the half of the rounded hill').Simon Taylor and Gilbert Márkus, The Place-Names of Fife, 5 vols (Donington: Tyas, 2006-12), III 117

Lathones was formerly a mining village.

One of the main attractions at Lathones is the Inn at Lathones, which features regular live music acts, and has included famous artists such as Henry McCullough (former guitarist of Paul McCartney's band Wings) and Bob Catley (singer from the band Magnum).{{Cite web|url=http://www.mundellmusic.com/gig_reviews_and_archives.php|title=Gig Reviews and Archives from live music events promoted by Mundell Music|date=6 March 2010|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20100306133909/http://www.mundellmusic.com/gig_reviews_and_archives.php |access-date=24 April 2023|archive-date=6 March 2010 }} The Inn at Lathones won the award of "Music Pub of the Year" at the Publican Awards in 2008.{{Cite web|url=https://www.morningadvertiser.co.uk/|title=Pub News & Pub Property Search for the UK pub trade|website=Morningadvertiser.co.uk|access-date=24 April 2023}}
