Critical reaction to Lazycame was mixed, but largely positive, with the NME describing the 1999 debut album as "a sometimes harrowing exercise in catharsis",{{cite web|url=https://www.nme.com/reviews/william/1979 |title=NME Reviews – London WC2 12-Bar Club |publisher=Nme.Com |date=1 September 2005|accessdate=21 August 2014}} and the 2000 EP Yawn as "easily the best thing William Reid has touched in years".{{cite web|url=https://www.nme.com/reviews//3426 |title=NME Reviews – yawn |publisher=Nme.Com |date=1 September 2005|accessdate=21 August 2014}}
