The journal is primarily remembered for Aurier's favourable early critique of the, then obscure, artist Vincent van Gogh. In Le Moderniste he described Van Gogh's paintings as "tremendous in their ardor, intensity, sunshine."{{cite book |title=The Glory of Van Gogh: An Anthropology of Admiration |url=https://archive.org/details/gloryvangogh00hein_371 |url-access=limited |first=Nathalie |last=Heinich |year=1997 |edition=illustrated and revised |publisher=Princeton University Press |page=[https://archive.org/details/gloryvangogh00hein_371/page/n166 153]|isbn=9780691032696 }} Aurier would later go on to champion the work of Van Gogh in Mercure de France.{{cite book |last=Pickvance |first=Ronald |title=Van Gogh In Saint-Rémy and Auvers |publisher=Metropolitan Museum of Art |date=1986 |isbn=0-87099-477-8 |page=[https://archive.org/details/vangoghinsaintre0000pick/page/310 310] |url=https://archive.org/details/vangoghinsaintre0000pick/page/310 }}
