Lean Cuisine is a brand of frozen entrées and dinners sold in the United States by Nestlé, and in Australia by Vesco (under a licensing agreement with Nestlé).{{Cite web|url=http://www.ausfoodnews.com.au/2009/10/29/simplot-gets-access-to-nestles-frozen-food-brands.html|title=Simplot gets access to Nestlé's frozen food brands {{!}} Australian Food News|website=www.ausfoodnews.com.au|date=29 October 2009 |access-date=2019-06-06}} The brand began as low-fat, low-calorie versions of Stouffer's products. Today, Lean Cuisine includes traditional dinners, ethnic dishes, pizzas, whole-grain Spa Cuisine entreés, and panini. The headquarters of Lean Cuisine in the United States is located in Solon, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland.

In February 2023, Nestle Canada announced their intentions to wind down and exit the frozen meals and pizza business in the Canadian market within the next six months.{{cite web|url=https://canadiangrocer.com/nestle-canada-announces-wind-down-and-exit-frozen-meals-and-pizza-business?mibextid=S66gvF| title=Nestlé Canada announces wind down and exit of frozen meals and pizza business }} Production and sales in the United States market are not affected by this decision and will continue.{{cite web |last1=Lee |first1=Heidi |title=Nestle to chop, slice and freeze sales of Delissio, Lean Cuisine in Canada |url=https://globalnews.ca/news/9453352/nestle-canada-frozen-pizza-delissio-lean-cuisine/ |website=Global News |access-date=7 February 2023 |date=1 February 2023}}

Overview and history

Lean Cuisine was created in 1981 to provide a healthier alternative to Stouffer's frozen meals.{{Cite web|url=https://www.thedailymeal.com/eat/if-you-grew-80s-you-ll-definitely-remember-these-foods-and-drinks-slideshow/slide-9|title=Lean Cuisine from If You Grew Up in the '80s, You'll Definitely Remember These Foods and Drinks Slideshow|website=The Daily Meal|date=25 August 2017 |language=en|access-date=2019-06-06}} It began with ten items and has expanded to include 100+ different meals. The brand name "Lean Cuisine" is considered by the FDA as a nutrient content claim, so all Lean Cuisine items are required to meet the "lean" criteria of less than 10 g fat, 4.5 g or less saturated fat, and less than 95 mg cholesterol.[http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/fdnewlab.html FDA/CFSAN FDA Backgrounder: The Food Label] {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20060805061440/http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/fdnewlab.html |date=2006-08-05 }} Lean Cuisine items are also calorie-controlled, with most items in the 200–300 calorie range, with a minimum of 140 calories and a maximum of 400 calories.[http://www.leancuisine.com/Products/Index.aspx LEAN CUISINE Products] {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20070304122446/http://www.leancuisine.com/Products/Index.aspx |date=2007-03-04 }}

A major competitor of Lean Cuisine is Healthy Choice, manufactured by Conagra Brands. It is required to meet "healthy" criteria by the FDA, since it includes "healthy" in its brand name. This includes a requirement to be below 480 mg of sodium in addition to fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol targets. Other competitors include Smart Ones, made by H. J. Heinz Company, and South Beach Diet,{{cite web |url=http://www.kraftfoods.com/South_Beach_Diet/ |title=Archived copy |access-date=2007-03-04 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20070302121737/http://www.kraftfoods.com/south_beach_diet |archive-date=2007-03-02 }} made by Kraft Heinz.
