Learning the vi and Vim Editors is a tutorial book for the vi and vim text editors written by Arnold Robbins, Elbert Hannah, and Linda Lamb and published by O'Reilly Media. The book is in its 8th edition. The book features a tarsier on the cover, an image which was also used on the cover of O'Reilly's Unix in a Nutshell and has been incorporated into O'Reilly Media. When questioned about the animal choice, publisher Tim O'Reilly described the tarsier as looking "like somebody who had been a text editor for too long."{{cite magazine|last= Levy|first=Steven |title=The Trend Spotter |magazine=Wired |date=October 2005 |volume=13 |issue=10 |url-status=dead |url=https://www.wired.com/wired/archive/13.10/oreilly.html?pg=3&topic=oreilly&topic_set= |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20121105090818/https://www.wired.com/wired/archive/13.10/oreilly.html?pg=3&topic=oreilly&topic_set= |archive-date=2012-11-05}}{{dead link|date=March 2025}}{{cite web|title=O'Reilly Catalog|url=http://oreilly.com/catalog/9780937175675|publisher=oreilly.com |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090529033725/http://oreilly.com/catalog/9780937175675 |archive-date=2009-05-29}}{{dead link|date=March 2025}}{{cite journal|title=Bring in the Animals|journal=Sys Admin: The Journal for UNIX System Administrators|volume=9|issue=1|pages=25}}
Author Arnold Robbins also coauthored the O'Reilly titles Unix In A Nutshell, Effective awk Programming, sed & awk, Classic Shell Scripting, and several titles in the pocket reference series related to those languages and tools. Elbert is a software engineer retired from the telecom industry. Linda Lamb is a former O'Reilly employee.{{citation needed|date=December 2014}}
In his 2008 review of the 7th edition for Dr. Dobb's Journal, author Mike Riley compared the coverage afforded by the book to a combination of the Vim online documentation and O'Reilly's vi Editor Pocket Reference. While noting that the book "continues to fulfill an apparent market need," he did not find the book appropriate for more advanced users.{{cite journal | title=Learning the vi and Vim Editors Book Review | author=Mike Riley | journal=Dr. Dobb's Journal | date=September 9, 2008 | url=http://www.drdobbs.com/open-source/learning-the-vi-and-vim-editors-book-rev/228701615 |url-access=subscription}}
