Biography

Lee Winter spent her early years growing up on the Gold Coast, Queensland,{{cite web |access-date=2024-03-13 |author=Lee Winter |date=2016-12-25 |language=en-US |title=Lee Winter’s Top 5 List of Unfathomable Christmas Traditions |url=https://www.ylva-publishing.com/2016/12/25/lee-winters-top-5-list-unfathomable-christmas-traditions/ |website=Ylva Publishing}} before her family moved to Brisbane. Originally, she had a three-decade career in journalism, winning awards for her work. Later, she became a novelist, specializing in lesbian fiction, covering genres from mystery and thriller to romance.

In 2015 Winter released the novel The Red Files; Marisol Cortez of Lesbians on the Loose described it as "a great read by a promising debut author", praised the writing and characters, and noted the inspiration from Winter's journalism career.{{Cite web |last=Cortez |first=Marisol |date=2015-10-14 |title=The Red Files By Lee Winter |url=https://www.lotl.com/books/library/romance/the-red-files-by-lee-winter/ |access-date=2024-03-15 |website=LOTL |language=en-US}} In 2016, she wrote the novel Requiem for Immortals; Tara Scott of Lesbians on the Loose said, "if I want to read something from a different genre, it’s a relief to not have to leave lesfic to find it, and Requiem for Immortals perfectly scratches that itch."{{Cite web |last=Scott |first=Tara |date=2016-09-20 |title=Lee Winter's 'Requiem For Immortals' |url=https://www.lotl.com/books/library/crime/lee-winters-requiem-for-immortals/ |access-date=2024-03-15 |website=LOTL |language=en-US}} Both of these novels were nominated for the Lambda Literary Award for Lesbian Mystery and won the Golden Crown Literary Society for Mystery/Thriller: The Red Files in 2016 and Requiem for Immortals in 2017.{{Cite web |title=Previous Goldie Winners |url=https://www.goldencrownliterarysociety.org/previous-goldie-winners |access-date=2 June 2023 |website=GCLS |language=en}}

That same year, Winter released another novel, Chaos Agent, which Tucker said "surprised [her] with its smart and heartfelt combination of questions about morality and ethics, as it concluded the story that began in The Fixer.{{Cite web |last=Tucker |first=Christina |date=2023-02-09 |title=“Chaos Agent” Has One of the Most Complicated, Heartbreaking Lesbian Romance Protagonists I’ve Ever Read |url=https://www.autostraddle.com/chaos-agent-lee-winter-review/ |access-date=2024-03-15 |website=Autostraddle |language=en-US}} Writing for AfterEllen, Claire Heuchan described The Villains as "a slick political thriller like Scandal if Olivia Pope was sapphic", noting that the relationship between the series' main characters Eden and Michelle was "the ultimate Opposites Attract romance".{{Cite news |last=Heuchan |first=Claire |date=25 May 2023 |title=Opposites Attract in Lee Winter's Sizzling Villains Books |work=AfterEllen |url=https://afterellen.com/lee-winter-villains-books-reviewed/ |access-date=10 June 2023}} She was one of three winners of that year's Alice B Readers Award.{{Cite web |title=Current Alice B Medal Winners |url=http://www.alicebawards.org/bio.html |access-date=1 June 2023 |website=The Alice B Awards}}
