Lee Yo-won (born April 9, 1980) is a South Korean actress. She is best known for her portrayal of Queen Seondeok in the eponymous hit period drama.
Career
Lee Yo-won was a sophomore in high school when she won a modeling contest and first appeared as a model in the November 1997 issue of fashion magazine Figaro. This led to commercials, then to minor roles in television series and movies. Though she started getting recognized by the public after the box-office success of anarchic comedy Attack the Gas Station (1999),{{cite web|url=https://news.naver.com/main/read.nhn?mode=LSD&mid=sec&sid1=001&oid=015&aid=0000352401|script-title=ko:스타데이트 이요원 <탤런트>|date=22 March 2001|website=The Korea Economic Daily|language=ko|access-date=10 January 2019|archive-date=22 October 2023|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231022181154/https://n.news.naver.com/mnews/article/015/0000352401?sid=001|url-status=live}} her first notable acting role was in controversial TV drama Blue Mist (2001), where she played a young woman in her 20s who becomes romantically involved with a married man in his 40s.{{cite web|last=Shin|first=Yong-ho|title=Lee Transforms, Playing Vixen or Angel|url=http://koreajoongangdaily.joinsmsn.com/news/article/article.aspx?aid=1890110|access-date=2012-11-18|work=Korea JoongAng Daily|date=10 June 2001|url-status=usurped|archive-url=https://archive.today/20120723230543/http://koreajoongangdaily.joinsmsn.com/news/article/article.aspx?aid=1890110|archive-date=23 July 2012}}
Critical darling Take Care of My Cat (2001) followed shortly, for which she received several newcomer awards. In a later interview with Elle Korea in 2009, she cited the film as her most memorable work.{{cite web|last=Yoon|first=Tae-hee|script-title=ko:'선덕여왕' 이요원, 패션화보도 '여왕포스'|url=http://www.asiae.co.kr/news/view.htm?idxno=2009121509484862647|work=10Asia|language=ko|access-date=2014-03-19|date=15 December 2009|archive-date=2014-03-19|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140319204523/http://www.asiae.co.kr/news/view.htm?idxno=2009121509484862647|url-status=live}}
But after starring in a number of big-screen star vehicles that weren't received well by audiences and critics, Lee felt mentally and physically exhausted. After finishing the historical drama Daemang (lit. "The Great Ambition", 2002), she made the surprising announcement that she was temporarily retiring from the entertainment scene.{{cite web|url=https://entertain.naver.com/read?oid=001&aid=0000253169|title=<연합인터뷰>SBS「대망」의 이요원|date=10 October 2002|website=Yonhap News Agency|language=ko|access-date=10 January 2019|archive-date=10 January 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190110183506/https://entertain.naver.com/read?oid=001&aid=0000253169|url-status=live}}
Lee made a successful acting comeback in 2005, as the lead actress in period drama Fashion 70's, which she chose because she wanted to work with TV director Lee Jae-gyu (who had previously directed Damo), and because it was not a typical love story, but depicted a woman's success in life and career.{{cite web|last=Suh|first=Jung-bo|title=Weekend Date: Lee Yo-won|url=http://english.donga.com/srv/service.php3?biid=2005051304988|access-date=2012-11-18|work=The Dong-a Ilbo|date=12 May 2005|archive-date=2012-03-30|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120330174840/http://english.donga.com/srv/service.php3?biid=2005051304988|url-status=live}} A supporting role followed in romantic comedy When Romance Meets Destiny.{{cite web|title=Lee Yo-Won Talks 광식이 동생 광태 (When Romance Meets Destiny)|url=http://twitchfilm.com/interviews/2005/12/lee-yo-won-talks-when-romance-meets-destiny.php|archive-url=https://archive.today/20120722115114/http://twitchfilm.com/interviews/2005/12/lee-yo-won-talks-when-romance-meets-destiny.php|url-status=dead|archive-date=22 July 2012|access-date=2012-11-18|work=Film2.0 via Twitch Film|date=2 December 2005}}
