Leeuwin Estate is an Australian winery and restaurant based in the Margaret River wine region of Western Australia.
History
Leeuwin Estate was established in 1973 by Denis and Tricia Horgan.{{cite web|url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/expat/4193512/Grapes-in-their-blood.html |title=Grapes in their blood |work=The Daily Telegraph|date=6 September 2004}} The land was previously used as a cattle station and after having been purchased as part of a deal to buy a plumbing business by Denis Horgan in 1969, the land was converted to vineyards based on the advice of the Western Australian Department of Agriculture.{{cite web|url=http://www.margaretriverwine.org.au/leeuwin.html |title=Leeuwin |publisher=Margaret River Wine |accessdate=2010-11-10 |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20110221112647/http://www.margaretriverwine.org.au/leeuwin.html |archivedate=21 February 2011 }}
Robert Mondavi provided significant advice during the planning and setup stages of the estate after contacting the Horgans in 1972 to promote the potential that Margaret River had as a wine region and to look for investment opportunities.{{cite web|url=http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/11/11/1068329559243.html |title=Raise a glass to the big white |work=The Sydney Morning Herald |date=12 November 2003 |accessdate=2010-11-10}}{{cite web|url=http://articles.latimes.com/1998/jul/19/travel/tr-4989/2 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20121103153836/http://articles.latimes.com/1998/jul/19/travel/tr-4989/2 |url-status=dead |archive-date=3 November 2012 |title=LA Times – Unknown but Nose-Worthy |website=Los Angeles Times|date=19 July 1998 |accessdate=2010-11-10}} Initial plantings consisted of Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Pinot noir.
Bob Cartwright was appointed as head winemaker in 1978. In the same year that Cartwright was appointed, the first vintage of wines were made. The vines had reached maturity and could provide enough grapes for commercial production and bottling levels. Cartwright held the position of head winemaker for 28 consecutive vintages until retiring in September 2005.{{cite news|title=Otto wins on way to perfect wine |newspaper=WA Business News |date=2005-12-06 |url=https://www.businessnews.com.au/article/Otto-wins-on-way-to-perfect-wine}}{{cite web |url=http://www.media.australia.com/en-au/featurestories/default_1709.aspx |title=Tourism Australia – Tasting a nation |publisher=Media.australia.com |date=20 September 2010 |accessdate=2010-11-10 |archive-url=https://archive.today/20120907145226/http://www.media.australia.com/en-au/featurestories/default_1709.aspx |archive-date=7 September 2012 |url-status=dead }}
