Knight as born on 4 August 1890 and educated at Christchurch Boys' High School[http://library.christchurch.org.nz/heritage/cemeteries/avonside/AvonsideParishCemetery.pdf Avondale Anglican Cemetery] and the University of New Zealand;"Who was Who" 1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 {{ISBN|0-7136-3457-X}}. and ordained in 1915Crockford's Clerical Directory1940-41 Oxford, OUP,1941 His first post was a curacy at Fendalton and then as a chaplain to the NZEF in France. At the end of World War I he was vicar of Leithfield then Kaiapoi. Next he was rector and chaplain of St Saviour's Boys’ Orphanage, Timaru.
