Linamar is a major factor in the economy of Southern Ontario, Canada. As a result, the federal government agreed to provide $50.7 million in a repayable loan to Linamar through its Automotive Innovation Fund and the province pledged up to $50.25 million in a one-time grant in January 2015. That funding, plus an internal investment of $400 million (by the company), was intended for expansion that was expected to create 1,200 jobs in Guelph, Ontario, by 2025. (Over 8,000 people were employed by Linamar in that city at the time.){{cite web |author= |date=January 12, 2015 |title=Guelph's Linamar plant gets funding to help create 1,200 jobs |url=http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/kitchener-waterloo/guelph-s-linamar-plant-gets-funding-to-help-create-1-200-jobs-1.2897588 |access-date=January 25, 2017 |website=CBC News |publisher=CBC}}

An early 2018 announcement indicated that the company would receive additional funding from the federal and provincial governments, up to $101 million, for expansion that would create 1500 additional jobs and maintain 8,000 others.{{cite news |last=Wingrove |first=Josh |date=15 January 2018 |title=Linamar to launch $750-million expansion with help from Ottawa, Ontario |newspaper=Toronto Star |publisher= |url=https://www.thestar.com/business/2018/01/15/linamar-to-launch-750-million-expansion-with-help-from-ottawa-ontario.html}}{{cite web |last=Seto |first=Chris |date=15 January 2018 |title=Guelph's Linamar to receive $99 million from feds, province |url=https://www.guelphmercury.com/news-story/8072818-guelph-s-linamar-to-receive-99-million-from-feds-province/?s=n1 |publisher=}} CEO Linda Hasenfratz, who is one of the members of the federal NAFTA advisory panel, told the news media that the funding would enable the expansion of its parts for conventional, hybrid, battery electric and fuel cell electric vehicles.{{cite web |last=Seto |first=Chris |date=15 January 2018 |title=Federal government, Ontario invest $100M to support Linamar auto parts maker |url=https://www.therecord.com/news-story/8074013-federal-government-ontario-invest-100m-to-support-linamar-auto-parts-maker/ |publisher=}} At that time, the company employed 9,000 individuals in Canada, mostly in Guelph. The number of manufacturing plants in Ontario totaled 23, with all but one in Guelph. "We plan to continue to invest in this evolving factory of the future in many different ways, with a focus on areas such as vision systems, collaborative advanced robotics, incorporating sensors into our products, and collecting that data to help us improve product design," she added.{{cite news |last1=Siekierska |first1=Alicja |date=15 January 2018 |title=Linamar investment seen as 'vote of confidence' amid NAFTA uncertainty |newspaper=Financial Post |publisher= |url=http://business.financialpost.com/transportation/linamar-investment-seen-as-vote-of-confidence-amid-nafta-uncertainty}} A federal government press release indicated that some of the funding would support artificial intelligence, three-dimensional printing and clean technology. The provincial government's release stated that the funding would enable the company to build next-generation transmissions and drivetrains, high-efficiency engine parts and develop technologies for electric and connected vehicles. It would also help create an innovation centre for R&D on artificial intelligence, machine learning, collaborative robotics and other technology.{{cite web |last=Blatchford |first=Andy |date=15 January 2018 |title=Feds, Ontario invest $100M to support Linamar auto parts maker |url=https://www.ctvnews.ca/business/feds-ontario-invest-100m-to-support-linamar-auto-parts-maker-1.3759692 |publisher=}} The company planned to invest up to $500 million over the long term in high-tech programmes such as artificial intelligence.{{Cite web |date=15 January 2018 |title=Linamar to spend up to $500M on AI, electric and connected vehicles |url=http://canada.autonews.com/article/20180115/CANADA/180119816/linamar-to-spend-up-to-$500m-on-ai-electric-and-connected-vehicles}}
