Uphill is Lincoln's old town with many grade listed buildings dating back to the medieval and roman periods these include Lincoln Cathedral, Lincoln Castle, Pottergate Arch, St Mary Magdalene and Newport Arch on the hill with Jew's House and Norman House on Steep Hill, among other listed buildings.{{cite web |last1=Taylor |first1=Louise |title=Conservation, archaeology and planning |url=https://www.lincoln.gov.uk/planning/conservation-archaeology-heritage/6#:~:text=Lincoln%20has%20418%20Listed%20Buildings,boundary%20stones%20and%20telephone%20boxes. |website=City of Lincoln Council |access-date=30 January 2023 |language=en}}

It has a number of independent small businesses. Castle Square and Bailgate are the centre to Uphill. The square hosts the farmers' market and is the meeting point for Steep Hill, the castle and cathedral.

The High Street is mainly commercial and pedestrian in both Downhill and Cornhill. Downhill is the centre's cultural and nightlife area. It is centred upon the Guildhall and Stonebow. North of the Guildhall there are a number of cultural buildings: the grade II listed New Theatre Royal was built in the area in 1892, it is 'new' because the previous building from 1806 was damaged in a fire;{{cite web |title=New Theatre Royal Lincoln {{!}} Theatres Trust |url=https://database.theatrestrust.org.uk/resources/theatres/show/196-theatre-royal#:~:text=There%20was%20a%20theatre%20(the,late%2019th%20century%20theatre%20design. |website=database.theatrestrust.org.uk |access-date=1 August 2023}} Lincoln Museum and the Usher Gallery. South-east of the Guildhall is Saltergate, Guildhall Street and St Swithins Square. The notable buildings on these streets are The Angel Coffee House, St Swithin's Church which is a Grade II* listed currently closed parish church. The church congregation currently meet opposite the church in a former Co-operative building.{{cite news |title=Uncertain future for old Lincoln church |url=https://thelincolnite.co.uk/2018/05/uncertain-future-old-lincoln-church/ |access-date=1 August 2023 |work=The Lincolnite |date=3 May 2018 |language=en}}{{cite news |last1=McAllister |first1=Richard |title=Former Lincoln nightclub to become 'space for worship' |url=https://www.lincolnshirelive.co.uk/news/lincoln-news/former-lincoln-nightclub-become-space-2767547 |access-date=1 August 2023 |work=LincolnshireLive |date=17 April 2019 |language=en}} Further down the high street is Waterside Shopping Centre and the River Witham which passes under High Bridge which the High Street is on.

Lincoln City Centre is on the northern and southern banks of the River Witham and it runs directly from the east of the city into Brayford Pool in the west of the city. Most of the river forms a small waterside plaza which runs along Waterside North and South to the City Square before it passes under High Bridge and under Wigford Way before merging into Brayford Pool and continuing west as Foss Dyke. The Foss Dyke then becomes a canal walk between Lincoln and Saxilby via Burton Waters and Skellingthorpe.{{cite web |title=Lincoln {{!}} Canal & River Trust |url=https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/places-to-visit/lincoln |website=canalrivertrust.org.uk |access-date=1 August 2023 |language=en}} Parks and gardens in and around the city centre include Temple Gardens, South Commons, West Common and Lincoln Arboretum.{{cite news |last1=Hill |first1=Alex |title=Lincoln Arboretum |url=https://www.lincoln.gov.uk/parks-open-spaces/lincoln-arboretum-1 |access-date=1 August 2023 |work=City of Lincoln Council |language=en}} Brayford Pool near the university offers a wide range of boating activities, coffee houses and bars as well as a cinema.{{cite web |title=Brayford Pool and Waterfront in Lincoln |url=https://www.enjoylincoln.co.uk/things-to-do/brayford-pool |website=Enjoy Lincoln |access-date=1 August 2023 |language=en}} The city is also home to many nightclubs and bars.
