Lingua: An International Review of General Linguistics is a peer-reviewed academic journal covering general linguistics that was established in 1949. It is published by Elsevier and the editor-in-chief is Marta Dynel (University of Łódź).
History
In October 2015 the editors and editorial board resigned en masse to protest their inability to come to an agreement with Elsevier regarding fair pricing models for open access publishing. They subsequently started a new journal, Glossa since Elsevier refused to relinquish the rights on the name Lingua.{{cite journal |last1=Jaschik |first1=Scott |title=Language of Protest |journal=Inside Higher Ed |date=2015-11-02 |url=https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2015/11/02/editors-and-editorial-board-quit-top-linguistics-journal-protest-subscription-fees}}{{Cite web|url=https://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?p=22162|title=Language Log » Lingua is dead. Long live Glossa!}}
Elsevier has continued Lingua under new leadership. Within the linguistics community, some consider Glossa as having inherited the reputation of the earlier journal. Elsevier's continuation is referred to (by some linguists) as Zombie Lingua and is regarded as a new journal.{{cite journal |last1=Moody |first1=Glyn |title=Entire editorial staff of Elsevier journal Lingua resigns over high price, lack of open access |journal=Ars Technica |date=2015-11-03 |url=https://arstechnica.co.uk/science/2015/11/entire-editorial-staff-of-elsevier-journal-lingua-resigns-over-high-price-lack-of-open-access/}}{{cite journal |last1=Fister |first1=Barbara |title=Whose Journal is This, Anyway? |journal=Inside Higher Ed |date=2015-11-12 |url=https://www.insidehighered.com/blogs/library-babel-fish/whose-journal-anyway}}{{citation|url=https://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?p=34106 |title=More Zombie Lingua shenanigans |publisher=Language Log |first=Eric |last=Baković |authorlink=Eric Baković |date=August 17, 2017}} Following a statement from their linguistics faculties, the University of California Libraries requested that Elsevier cancel their subscription to post-2015 volumes of Lingua.{{citation|url=https://osc.universityofcalifornia.edu/2016/02/uc-lingustics-faculty-support-glossa/ |title=UC linguistics faculty pledge support for Glossa, call for cancellation of Lingua |publisher=University of California Office of Scholarly Communication|date=2016-02-16}} In a joint post on Language Log in 2016, Eric Baković and Kai von Fintel noted lower quality standards at the new Lingua which included a paper withdrawn due to plagiarism.{{citation|url=https://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?p=28545 |title=Asleep at the wheel at Zombie Lingua? |publisher=Language Log |first1=Eric |last1=Baković |authorlink=Eric Baković|first2=Kai|last2=von Fintel |date=September 30, 2016}}
